Students Weave the Good and the Bad into Film
A warm, white sandy beach or a chilly mountain are two destinations proposed by four buddies for a
holiday intended to save their friendship.
Kain Warna Warni (Colorful Cloth) is a film produced by Teh O Ais, which tells a story about the imagined
adventures of four friends - to beaches and mountains - in two different plots.
"It's about the choices you have in life. Through this movie we've tried to show that a choice can mean
something to a friendship, and that choices will also shape our lives in the future," Kain Warna Warni director, Ida
Bagus Charisma, says.
The 88-minute film begins when Lana, Bella, Danur and Kirana - all Indonesian students at a university in
Malaysia - have a conversation at a cafe and realize they need a vacation.
Jokes, laughter and light teasing highlight their trips, but no matter how close they get or where they go,
problems follow them. The way they handle these problems is the key to how their friendship will evolve in the
future.
Life is like a cloth which can get crumpled, dirty or torn, or just stay clean, depending on the way people
handle things, Charisma says.
Kain Warna Warni was screened in Malaysia in May, and at Blitz Megaplex at the Grand Indonesia mall in
Jakarta from July 28 to 30. It will also soon be screened at campuses around Jakarta.
Teh O Ais (literally meaning "iced tea" in Malaysian) was established in 2006 and comprises Indonesian
students of Limkokwing University, Malaysia, who share a love for films. The group is also part of the Merah Putih

ahzarafif.blogspot.com
Club, a community of Indonesian students at the university, and has 30 members (only 10 of whom study
filmmaking at the Limkokwing).
Equipped with strong wills, high self-confidence and several short films under their belts, Teh O Ais started
their first feature-length film in 2008, Charisma said.
"I believe in a proverb that says great films are 1 percent wonderful idea and 99 percent hard work," she
says.
The preparations for Kain Warna Warni took around three months, and shooting took 10 days, Charisma
says. Most of the film was shot in Malaysia so that the students could balance their studies and the film.
Before Kain Warna Warni, Teh O Ais had already released six short films, comprising Majenun, Tiga
(Three), Monolog (Monologue), Kembali (Return), Pilon (Pylon), and Seribu (One thousand). All of these were shot
at Limkokwing.
"I came here because I know the director and was curious to see Teh O Ais' work," said Achmad Satrio of
Dr. Moestopo University in South Jakarta, at a recent screening of Kain Warna Warni.
"The movie is cool. It not only shows the greatness of having someone to share fun times with, but also
the pain," Achmad said.
