Opportunity

By Vernon Smith,
2015 Program Committee Chair, Universal Belting Resource

his years convention theme, OASIS OF OPPORTUNITY,

says it all. The Program Committee looks forward to bringing
you an exciting and informative event in the heart of Palm
Springs.
The Convention will again kick off with the Dine Around, Annual
Golf Outing and Tennis Tournament. Golf will be held on property
at the Indian Wells Golf Resort, one of the premier courses in Palm
Springs. The Oasis of Opportunity Welcome Reception will also
be held at this beautiful Golf Club. We will be offering both our
traditional tennis tournament and bringing back the popular table
tennis event.
The business session will feature two speakers not to be missed.
Joe Theismann, will kick things off with a powerful keynote on
Managing to Win, drawing parallels between his successful
career as an NFL quarterback and you. He knows and understands
that good management and effective leadership is not a game
of follow the leader: It is about PEOPLE -- listening to them...
trusting them... and motivating individuals to take ownership of
team goals. By example, Joe shows that an effective leader cares
about and trusts subordinates and demonstrates it by empowering
individuals to take risks in order to perform above levels that have
become comfortable.
After lunch, Dr. Albert Bates will present on The Real Profit
Drivers. This session will review the largest sample of distributor

profitability ever undertaken to reveal what actually drives profit

across a wide range of industries. The session will also lay out the
sorts of actions that firms need to take to improve profitability, including sales growth, gross margin improvement and cost control.
It will identify how much of an improvement is needed and how
that improvement can be generated.
By popular demand, the spouse/companion tours and activities
have been expanded this year. Tours and activities are offered each
day of the convention. Enjoy world-class shopping, Jeep rides into
the desert, celebrity home tours, fitness classes, spa experiences
and much more.
Many characterize the Expo as the highlight of the NIBA Convention and this year will continue that trend. We are anticipating a
record number of exhibitors this year.
The Convention concludes with a 50s supper club themed
farewell reception. Held onsite, this will be a night to remember.
There may even be a surprise appearance from some of the celebrities from Palm Springs star studded past.
The Program Committee is committed
to making this years convention an

Letter from the President

hen Tom Wujek presented me with the NIBA Presidents gavel at the
Seattle Convention, I was truly humbled and honored to accept the
privilege to serve. Many fine individuals have served before me and the
legacy of each of them resonates within our fine organization. I extend my gratitude to all of the Past Presidents who have served and I commit myself to serve in
similar fashion guiding this great organization toward our goals and objectives set
forth at the 2013 strategic planning session.

John Shelton,
2015 NIBA President

NIBA is an organization lead by volunteers who lend their time, energy and
resources to provide products and services to its membership. The commitment
of these fine ladies and gentlemen provide the membership with tremendous
value. The committees are made up of people with vast amounts of knowledge,
passion and the desire to serve the organization. The resources each provides to
the unique committees allow the membership as a whole to benefit whether it
be a technical seminar, products and services, scholarships, marketing materials,
program planning or recruiting and retaining membership; each serves a valuable
purpose. Those committees are supported by the SAMI Staff, lead by Jennifer Rzepka, our Executive Director. I extend my sincere thanks to all of you who make
this a resourceful and productive industry organization.
This years Annual Convention will be held in Indian Wells, CA at the beautiful
Indian Wells Renaissance resort. The property is located in the Palm Springs desert adjacent to two world-class golf courses. The Program Committee is working
diligently to plan a schedule brimming with exciting events, speakers as well as
social activities for attendees as well as guests. The area is full of opportunities
to explore desert life as well as the mountains surrounding the Coachella Valley.
There is literally something for everyone in Palm Springs. I hope you will attend
and bring your associates and guests to the convention this year. It is sure to be a
valuable investment.

NIBA Online Training Important to Customer Service at Flexco

By Kerry Meacham, 2015 Marketing Committee, Flexco

raining our customer service representatives (CSRs)

is a high priority at Flexco. Were constantly looking
for ways to improve our knowledge so we can help
our distributors deliver value to their customers. In this
effort, Flexco bought the NIBA Lightweight Basics Online
Training Course for 2015. Shortly thereafter, I had an annual
planning session with Logan McCoy, Customer Service
Manager, and advised him of the training available for the
CSRs. My expectation was for Logan to inform the CSRs
about the availability of the program so they can use this to
enhance their knowledge. Well, he took it a step further. He
felt so strongly in the program and content that he added

Course to each CSRs Performance Review document under
their objectives for the year. This document is used for helping
set the expectations for each employee, and more importantly
is used for appraising performance. Logans proactive measure
virtually assures 100% compliance by his customer service
group. I know some companies believe the information is
valuable, but they arent sure if the training information will
be used. This is one way of showing your employees how
important training is for them and your company.

individuals and corporations, the NIBA Presidential and
Memorial scholarship programs continue to grow, as
shown in the below chart. The students awarded the scholarships have exhibited significant community involvement,
leadership, and academic achievements, all of which embodies the past presidents, officers, directors and committee
members which the scholarships were designed to honor.
Each year the Products and Services Committee carefully
evaluates the scholarship program to continue to improve
this member benefit. In January 2015, the committee increased the value of the Memorial scholarship from $1,500
to $2,000, enhanced the scoring methodology, and discussed
ways to increase international participation.

There are three primary fundraising

programs for the scholarship fund:
1. The Annual Go For The Gold Program:
This annual program allows companies
to contribute to the scholarship fund and
reach one of three levels.
All participating companies are
recognized in both the Belt Line
as well as at the annual convention.

2. Presidents Club Program:

This program is based on cumulative donations to the
scholarship program. Go For The Gold, Raffle Tickets,
and other donations will be added to your cumulative
total. After your company has cumulatively donated
$1,500 to the scholarship fund they will be inducted into
the Presidents Club and will then have the opportunity
to reach one of three Gem Levels: Ruby, Emerald, or
Diamond. President Club members will be recognized in
the Belt Line, on NIBAs website, at the Annual Convention meeting, as well as gems on your name badges at the
convention.

Use Free Resources to Recruit, Hire and Onboard Your Next

Greatest Employee
By Mary Jawgiel, Industrial Careers Pathway Program Director

et to Know: Industrial Careers Pathway (ICP)

We all know how difficult it is to find skilled,
qualified entry-level employees to fill open
positions in industrial distribution. And, it is only going to
get more difficult. The U.S. Social Security Administration
is projecting that four million Baby Boomers will retire this
yeara trend that will continue for many years to come.
Your next new hire will most likely be someone from
the Millennial generation: those born between 1985-
2000. Competition for these workers is fierce. Industrial
distribution is not the only field looking to hire Millennial
workers to replace retiring Baby Boomers. In fact, every
industry is working to lure the best and brightest talent into
its fold. The industrial distribution field is at a disadvantage
because not many Millennials have ever heard of industrial
distribution. ICP is working to change that.
We Know Millennials Dont Know About Your Field
Using a contribution from the Harold C. Schott Foundation,
last June ICP conducted an online survey of over 500 16
to 24-year-olds in North America. The survey targeted
Millennials who would be likely candidates for entry-level
positions: those not planning on attending a four-year
college. To be included in the survey, respondents also self-
selected at least four of the following six key characteristics:
1) like knowing how things are made, 2) want a hands-on
career, 3) consider themselves problem-solvers, 4) like
working with people, 5) like math and numbers, and 6) like
working on cars/machines.
We Also Know When They Learn About You, They Like You
Results of the survey offered both good and bad news. The
bad news is only 15 percent of respondents said they had
previously heard of industrial distribution. The good news
is when asked to read two short paragraphs describing
industrial distribution and asked how appealing the field
of industrial distribution was to them, 61 percent marked
either very or somewhat appealing.
This gives us a good starting point to educate potential
industrial distribution employees about the benefits of
careers in the field. ICP is using social media, the ICP

Belt Line March 2015

website, and Internet radio advertising along with displays

at national events like SkillsUSA and SkillsCANADA to
raise awareness of the incredibly rewarding jobs available
in industrial distribution. ICP also reaches out to instructors
and administrators at high schools and community
colleges to determine when and where local career fairs
are scheduled in order to coordinate a presence by a local
volunteer from that area.
Once a relevant event is identified, (think: career fairs, in-
class presentations, company tour requests) ICP enlists the
help of its Alliance Partners, like NIBA, to find volunteers to
attend.
Getting involved at the local level and establishing
relationships with students, teachers and parents is how you
are going to find your workforce for tomorrow. See where
ICP has already been by visiting
industrialcareerspathway.org/Success.
Sound Like Fun? You Could Help!
Watch for communication from NIBA about career fair
opportunities in your area and then volunteer! ICP does
all the work to make you look great. ICP provides handout
materials, great giveaways, banner stands, tablecloths and a
candy bowl you can fill with your favorite treat.
With your help, we hope to increase the level of awareness
among the younger generation about the benefits a career
in industrial distribution has to offer. ICP plans to conduct
a follow up survey in 2017 to measure the success of
our collective promotion efforts. With your help we can
increase the percentage of young people who know what
our industry is all about.
Many Free Resources Are Available To You
Visit www.industrialcareerspathway.org/hire to learn about
all the resources available to employers for recruiting, hiring
and onboarding your next employee. If you have questions,
want to volunteer or just want to learn more about how you
benefit, contact ICP at infoicp@ptda.org

In addition to tire retreading and repair, B&J Rocket provides
tools to companies where conveyor belts are renewed,
repaired or assembled. In order to address this industry more
specifically in the future, B&J is presenting a new special
catalog with an appropriate choice of tools. This makes it
easier for companies working with conveyor belts to find the
right products from the extensive B&J program. Additional
tools used specifically for this field complete the catalog
contents. Call 574-825-5802 or email info@bj-rocket.com to
request a copy of the new catalog.
B&J Rocket introduces the Flat disc vented from the
successful Copper Carbide line has special cooling vents.
Not only do the vented flat discs reduce the heat generated
by buffing, they also provide better drainage of the dust
particles from the buffing process. Its a good example of the
improvement to an existing tool by B&J. Ultimately, this is
also a result from the companys ProTeam program, which is

Wing Pulleys - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - And the Solution
By Leo J. Laughlin, Product Engineering Manager, Precision Pulley & Idler

ing pulleys were developed in the 1960s to be

the first welded steel self-cleaning pulley. At that
time conveyor belts were cotton ply, belt speeds
averaged 300 feet per minute (fpm) and wing pulleys worked.
The intermittent contact (chordal action) would shake the belt
and any sticky material would shake loose, falling and hitting
the gussets, bouncing off and away from the pulley and belt.
And wing pulleys would solve many problems for the quarries.
Life was good.
Users started putting them in any position that had a build-up
problem as the contact bar was a half oval, noise was not a
problem. But, when users added wing pulleys to successive
positions, such as bends and take-up, it did cause a problem.
There would be so much vibration it would shake the
whole conveyor. Then if the pulley were similar in diameter
harmonics would be set up between the wing pulleys shaking
things so much, it would shake things apart. Life was bad.
Some set out new rules, to only use wing pulleys on the dirty
side of the belt, which are snubs and bends. Others set up
rules to use them only on take up and tails, places where
material would be brought to the pulley by the belt. These
rules reduced the vibration to an acceptable limit, and life was
good again.
As conveyors developed belts were starting to be made from
other materials that could withstand more tension. Conveyors
were being run faster and faster in an effort to carry more
tonnage. These improvements caused issues with the usage of
wing pulleys as the higher tensions and speed led to vibration
issues again, and life was bad.
Then half oval was no longer available for usage as a contact
bar, as steel companies were no longer producing it. The
pulley companies started using flat bar, which dramatically
increased the noise as the flat bar would slap the belt. Life
was not only bad it was really noisy.
The spiral wing was developed to address these issues. The
constant contact eliminated the vibration. It has an added
benefit of reducing wear on mechanical fasteners as well. Life
was good again.

However, as speeds increased the wing pulley no longer

would cause the material to slide down the gussets as the
centripetal force was greater than gravity. Fugitive material
would be thrown outward (perpendicular to the wing). While
this wasnt a problem for snubs and bends, those pulleys
in contact with the dirty side of the belt, the material was
thrown on the ground. For take-up and tail pulleys, the belt
is between the pulley and the ground, the material would
be thrown back onto the belt. Where the belt would pull the
material back into the pulley again, over and over. As more
material spilled onto the back of the belt eventually the wing
pulley would plug up as there was no longer any action to
move the material to the side. Cleaning out a plugged up
wing pulley was a very ugly job!
Thus the Solution: The problem was that straight wing would
throw the material straight out and back onto the belt. While
the gussets were at an angle the centripetal force never let
the material hit it except when the pulley was stopped. Note:
Gussets do not show signs of wear, which tells us that material
doesnt hit them.
The obvious answer is to angle the wing. To give the material
a new direction away from the belt, but an angled wing is not
going to be strong enough to bridge the span between hubs.
As any downward pressure would tilt the wing, wanting to
collapse the pulley. It seems that a tube is needed to create a
good foundation upon which to build the wing pulley.
It also seems that gussets do little good, other than brace the
wings. Instead of using gussets, use a disc in the center to
brace the wings.
As the wings are angled a flat contact bar would not work,
as at one end of the wing the belt would be only contacting
the edge, while at the other end it would be contacting the
other edge. Only edge contact would cause extreme wear
issues, therefore eliminating the edges by using round bar for
the contact bar. Rather than having the round bars meeting
in the center, creating a V point that digs into the belt. Using
offset wings to reduce the distance between wings (at the
center) without creating choke points for material to plug. By
having the bar curve in towards the shaft at the center of the
pulley eliminates the end of the contact bar poking into the
belt. Contact bar wear issues can be addressed by offering AR
(Abrasion Resistant) bar.

2015 Standard Mileage Rates

From irs.gov

he Internal Revenue Service issued the 2015 optional standard mileage rates
used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes.

Beginning on January 1, 2015, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car, van,
pickup or panel truck will be:
57.5 cents per mile for business miles driven, up from 56 cents in 2014
23 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes, down half a cent
from 2014
14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations
The standard mileage rate for business is based on an annual study of the fixed
and variable costs of operating an automobile, including depreciation, insurance,
repairs, tires, maintenance, gas and oil. The rate for medical and moving purposes
is based on the variable costs, such as gas and oil. The charitable rate is set by law.
Taxpayers always have the option of claiming deductions based on the actual costs
of using a vehicle rather than the standard mileage rates.
A taxpayer may not use the business standard mileage rate for a vehicle after
claiming accelerated depreciation, including the Section 179 expense deduction,
on that vehicle. Likewise, the standard rate is not available to fleet owners (more
than four vehicles used simultaneously). Details on these and other special rules
are in Revenue Procedure 2010-51, the instructions to Form 1040 and various
online IRS publications including Publication 17, Your Federal Income Tax.

Besides the standard mileage rates, Notice 2014-79, posted today on IRS.gov, also
includes the basis reduction amounts for those choosing the business standard
mileage rate, as well as the maximum standard automobile cost that may be used
in computing an allowance under a fixed and variable rate plan.

Wing Pulleys continued from previous page

The resulting Herringbone Wing has 2 methods to improve
tracking. One is the traditional crown, but instead of doing
a very steep crown as most wings have (twice that of a drum
pulley) it uses a radial end crown to smooth the transition
between the flat center part of the pulley and crown on the
end. Like most crowns this is most effective with large angles
of wrap as in a tail or take-up.
The second has a tracking effect from the angled wings, which
is called the snow plow effect. When one uses a blade to
plow snow if the blade is in the shape of a V or an effect angle
on each side then the side-forces are in balance and it stays
straight easily. This is in effect as the belt enters and leaves the
pulley. The angle of wrap has no effect on this tracking force.

Belt Line March 2015

The Herringbone Wing (HBW) with its angled wings and

round contact bars has constant contact with the belt,
eliminating vibration and noise. This helps maintain contact at
the tail pulley between the skirtboard seals and the belt.
Herringbone Wing pulleys were developed in 2010 and have
been used in applications involving coal, potash, limestone,
petroleum coke, grain, etc. and have performed well in
all. They have reduced maintenance, vibration, noise, and
improved tracking over pulleys they have replaced. Analysis
has shown that they are stronger than the wings they replace,
and have been used when conventional wings will not handle
the load.
