ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Apart from the efforts of myself, the success of anything depends largely on the
encouragement and guidelines of many others. I take this opportunity to express my
gratitude to the people who have been instrumental in the successful completion of this
seminar.
I am deeply grateful to the Honorable principal Mr. Shahir V K for providing all
the facilities to do this seminar. I am extremely happy to mention a great word of
gratitude to Chairman of Evaluation Committee, Dr. Sabeena M V, Professor,
Department of Civil Engineering for her tremendous support and valuable suggestions in
making this report.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Mr. Rahmathulla A, Head of the
Department of Civil Engineering for his encouragement in carrying out this seminar and
also the facilities provided for making this seminar a success.
I also extend my sincere thanks to all the faculties of Civil Engineering
Department and to all my friends who helped me a lot for selecting the topic.

ABSTRACT
Sandwich structured composites are a special class of composite materials, which
have become very popular due to their high specific strength and bending stiffness.
Sandwich composites are used in a wide variety of structural applications, largely
because of their relative advantages over other materials. Sandwich Constructions, which
consist of two relatively thin and stiff faces bonded to a low density core, offer many
benefits such as high bending stiffness, good thermal and acoustic insulation properties,
and high specific energy absorption. Due to increasing global competition, a number of
industries have a strong need to develop an advanced honeycomb core for light weight
sandwich panels, with significantly higher specific strength and bending stiffness than
presently available. Sandwich panel structures with thin front faces and low relative
density cores offer significant impulse mitigation possibilities provided panel fracture is
avoided. Here steel square honeycomb and pyramidal truss core sandwich panels with
core relative densities of 4% were made from a ductile stainless steel and tested under
impulsive loads simulating underwater blasts. Both sandwich structures showed a 30%
reduction in the maximum panel deflection compared with a monolithic plate of identical
mass per unit area. The physical and mechanical characteristics of the face sheet used for
the fabrication of the sandwich panels are tested as per the ASTM standards. To
characterize the flexural properties of the sandwich composites, a series of 3-point
bending, 4-point bending and short beam shear strength (SBSS) tests were conducted on
the sandwich panels.
