Lets move on to the next level. It is compound sentences.

Contains two independent clauses (simple sentences) joined by a coordinating

conjunction.

-The conjunctions are as follows: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so

(Helpful hint: The first letter of each of the conjunction spells FANBOYS.)
Except for very short sentences, these conjunctions are always preceded by a comma.
Slide 11
In the compound sentences, it contains 2 independent clause. When two simple sentences
are joining together, we can make up a compound sentence.
There are examples of subordinating conjunction which are because, even though, before,
where, whenever.

Slide 12
Let use mnemonic to remember the coordinating conjunctions: FANBOYS which means For,
And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So.
Slide 13

As for the example, She dictated, and I typed. It is 1 simple sentence plus 1 simple
sentence. It is joined by coordinating conjunction, and.
Another example is The meal was expensive, but it was spoiled, so I threw it. but and
so join the three independent clauses.
Slide 14
Now, lets have some exercise to make sure everyone more understand about the compound
sentences.
Slide 15 - 16
This time, we go for higher level. It is complex sentences. Who knows what is complex
sentences? Complex sentences is the sentence that combine one independent clause and
one or more dependent clauses (D) joined by a subordinating conjunction.
Dependent clauses do not express a complete thought and cant stand alone as
sentences. A dependent clause begins with a subordinating conjunction, such as
because, since, after, although, when, etc.
Slide 17
Lets take a look at these formats when writing complex sentences.
A dependent clause and a independent clause. This is the example. Since I have no milk, Ill
go to the store.
Since I have no milk ( dependent clause ). Ill go to the store (independent clause ).
Slide 18
These are the example, please take a good look at the dependent clause which have been
hightlight. It clears that its cannot stand by itself to create a complete sentence. It will be
hanging up if there is no independent clause.
