UbD Rationale

I chose this lesson so I could incorporate several topics in both

math and technology. Students are asked to apply their knowledge of
fractions, decimals and area to create a room of their dreams. They
must also use their iPad to create a visual of their room and make a
presentation to showcase their choices and justify those choices.
According to Dales Cone of Experience students remember 90% of what they do ("Dales
cone of," ). In this lesson students are problem solving, creating and presenting.
One rationale for this lesson is based on the theory of
Mathematical Problem Solving by A. Schoenfeld. The theory states,
teaching mathematics should be approached as a problem-solving domain
("Mathematical problem solving,"). Students need the opportunity to think critically and
apply their knowledge of math processes to real world situations.
This lesson also supports Blooms Higher Level Thinking Skills. The creation of
the students presentations supports the evaluating and creating levels of Blooms.
Students are compiling the information they are gathering from their problem solving and
explaining and justifying the decisions they made in their room design.
This lesson covers a variety of standards from KSCCRS and ISTE/NETS.
Students are being evaluated on both their math abilities as well as their use of
technology.
