INTRODUCTION
INDIAN RAILWAYS

"Lifeline of the Nation

Owned and operated by the Government
of India through theMinistry of Railways.
Indian Railways is the world's
ninth largest commercial or utility
employer
India's first train run between Bombay
andThane.

RAILWAY COUPLING

A coupling (or a coupler) is a mechanism

for connecting rolling stock in a train.
The design of the coupler is standard,
and is almost as important as the track
gauge, since flexibility and convenience
are maximised if all rolling stock can be
coupled together.

etc.

BUFFERS AND CHAIN

The vehicles are coupled by hand using a

hook and links with aturnbucklethat
draws the vehicles together.
Vehicles havebuffers, one at each corner
on the ends, which are pulled together
and compressed by the coupling device.
This arrangement limits the slack in
trains and lessens shocks.

LINK AND PIN

Principle - The system suffered from a

lack of standardisation regarding size and
height of the links, and the size and
height of the pockets.

CENTER BUFFER COUPLER(CBC)

CBC overcome some of the limitations of

the screw couplers -- limited draft load
and energy absorption capacity, lack of
anti-climbing feature, etc. CBC would also
reduce the inter-coach distance.
All new freight stock and container rake
wagons, have CBC.
A locking pin indicates whether the CBC
portion is properly coupled or not.
