Our Final Product Shift

Changing the original title

We were incredibly unsure of the title we should give our product,
with countless amounts of suggestions we settled with the idea of the
title being the The Wheelman.
However after careful consideration we have decided to change the
title to Shift, we felt that the word really does represent our product
with the main place where filming takes place is within a car.
We were stuck between either choosing Throttle or Shift, the
word itself means a change in something therefore as our product
progresses you appear to notice a change in tempo throughout,
almost as if to say the product is constantly Shifting Up through the
gears.

SH

The

Locations
We filmed over various locations throughout the process such as:
College house (a building originally used as our schools sixth
form area, thankfully its extremely old giving it a hotel feeling)
and Mellows Meadow.

We had to change locations during the planning process due to

talks breaking down between Sin and the hotel we considered
using in Torquay, therefore resulting in us having to combine
Lennys house and College house to create the effect of a hotel
room.

In what ways does your media product, use develop or

challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The thriller conventions we agreed on

were:
Set up some kind of mystery (Barthes Enigma Code)
Propps character theory e.g. Hero and Villain roles
Eerie soundtrack to create tension
Close ups to build tension and show emotion
Low Key Lighting and the use of back lighting for
silhouettes
High and Low angled shots (as seen within our
product)
a McGuffin (the password the politician has could
be replaced by a USB or a brief case )
a Plot Twist
However the ones we actually decided to use in our
thriller are highlighted in Red

There are twist and turns all the way through

our product therefore the character roles
continuously change throughout.

Representation
Throughout our production we represented our male characters in
opposite ways:
One of them being a dominant strong character who is violent while
remaining calm throughout.
The other being a vulnerable weak character whom gives up when he
is faced with a problem.
Both of them are shown wearing formal clothes, showing the
dominance they have within this fictional world we have created,
with the politician obviously being a dominant figure within
government, and the main protagonist being dominant over the
politician.

How does your media product represent and attract a particular social group?
Within our Media Product we feel we have represented various social groups.
Smartphone users - a recently released smart phone is used within our opening,
appealing to 1.4 Billion people who use smartphones.
Peugeot 206 drivers the place were a majority of the product is filmed or based
upon is in a Peugeot 206, the overall sales of this model is 7,962,700 therefore
our product may attract a large demographic. Also it is a very standard car that
would appeal to a majority of the younger male audience.
The soundtrack known as Clue Two was used within our product, we felt that
this certain soundtrack added various amounts of tension within our piece, it
really set the tone of the film from the get go.
Royal Blood was used because we felt that they are one of the most talked about
act currently within the UK therefore they appeal to a majority of the younger
generation.
AC/DC was used as we felt it would appeal to a much older generation, we felt
that those who do venture out to see our product and are above 35 will still be
able to connect to our product.

Realistically we would use YouTube to distribute our

media product, we feel that..
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

However in an ideal world we would have wanted to

work with EuropaCorp to distribute our media project,
due to their past work and success with.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Throughout the whole research process we aimed our

product towards a young male demographic.
With our Thriller containing violence as well as fast cars
we feel the product appealed more so to young males.
However our product did appeal to a secondary
audience, with the females within our focus group really
liking our final product.

to take a gap year while his friends continue on to
University. Hopefully when he does go to University he
want to pursue a degree in photography, as he has a key
eye for visual effects.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of

constructing this product?
We encountered a handful Problems throughout our production,
some of which set us back and some of which enhanced our skills of
the editing process. Having not had much experience in Premiere
Pro, we had to rely on the internet to present us tutorials on what to
do.
Even from the beginning we were unsure as to how to use the
camera, however eventually we learned how to film properly which
is how we have presented you with our product
The editing software, once we had become confident with it, it
became rather easy to get along with. Resulting in us each having
confidence when editing, all contributing in the final product.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what would you do feel you have learnt in the progression
from it to the full product?

There were major differences between

our preliminary task and our full
product, mostly due to being able to use
more state of the art equipment such as
the cameras that were available to us.

Also we felt we had more options to do

as we wish within the editing process,
due to the fact that our preliminary task
was edited in such short time we couldnt
progress as much as we wished to. With
all the options now available to us within
Premiere Pro for our full product, we
experimented and learnt a lot of what the
editing process has to offer and how it
can bring a product such as ours together.

With the countless amounts of

options now opened up for us, we
could now finally experiment
with title sequences as well as
soundtracks, something we
couldnt do during our
preliminary.
However as stated in the
previous slide we also learnt
that editing never runs as
smoothly as you hope, after
tedious hours of awaiting to
edit footage we came to a
halt when our peak
generating files were not
cooperating with what we
wished to do we had to rely
on network staff to allow us
to actually get on with the
editing, slowing our process
down completely.
