SLTMobitel is the national service provider in Sri Lanka.

The Company provide domestic and


corporate services which include fixed and wireless telephone, Internet access and IT services
domestic, public and business sector customers.
Sri Lanka Telecom has a history over 150 years, having started its operations in 1858 with the
establishment of the Telegraphic Circuit between Galle and Colombo. In the same year it
established its first international Telegraph Communication between then called Ceylon, and
India. Since then, Sri Lanka Telecom has passed several milestones, Including in1991 Sri Lanka
Telecom came a corporation and in 1997 the company was privatized with the collaboration of
Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) and listed in colombo stock exchange.
In 2008, NTT sold its stake in SLT to Global Telecommunication Holdings N.V. of Netherlands,
which currently owns 44.98% stake in Sri Lanka Telecom Whilst 50.50% is owned by the
Government of Sri Lanka and the Balance Shares remain with the general public.
Mobitel was incorporated in 1993 as the third mobile telephone provider in the Sri Lankan
market. Originally a collaboration between Sri Lanka Telecom and Telstra. Mobitel has been
wholly owned by SLT since November 2002.
In January 2004, the company launched its fully-fledged 2.5G GSM network that is
EDGE/GPRS enabled and designed to operate on dual band. In December 2007, the company
launched its 3.5G HSPA network - the first Super 3.5G network in South Asia. Further, Mobitel
successfully demonstrated HSPA + MIMO technology with down link speed up to 28.8 Mbit/s
and carried out successful trial of 4G/LTE technology with downlink speed exceeding 96 Mbit/s,
for the first time in the South Asian Region 2011. Investments committed to date in the
2.5G/3.5G/4G networks and service offering amounts to over US$ 500mn.
Mobitel launched its GSM operations in January 2004 with the deployment of a fully-fledged
GSM network in the 800 MHz and 1800 MHz band, which is EDGE/GPRS enabled. In 2005 and
2006, Mobitel traded the 800 MHz band for slots made available from the 900 MHz spectrum.
With this enhancement, Mobitel embarked on a field trial of 3G at the 1st International Buddhist
Conference held in 2006, setting the stage for the launch of its 3G services in Sri Lanka.
Investments committed to date for this technology to provide 3G and GSM totals over US$200
million. This included increasing the present number of base stations from 600 to 1,500 by the
end of 2008.

In 21st November 2013 Mobitel Launched Mcash. This was considered as a valid currency in Sri
Lanka by Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

Over the Last 10 years, ICT growth & Mobile user growth were as below in Sri Lanka.
Already Mobitel is having more than 9 million subcriber base in MChash.

MCash is the Mobile Cash Service. Payment & Settlement division of Central Bank of Sri Lanka has given
the Licen to perform the mcash. Mobitel has deposits 100Mn in the Commercial Bank which is the
custodial bank of the MCash. . Mcash can creat the money in the market up to the deposit amount in
the Custodial Bank. If Mobitel company is Closing, Mcash users are no need to be warry, since custodial
bank is paying there deposits back to users. Duetshe Bank is the Trustee Bank of Mcash.
MCash Facility can be enjoed by the Hutch Users and the Airtel Users. Its not limited to Mobitel
users.This service can use by just typing #111# or using the app. It is very simple. MCash is keeping
accounts in 10,000/- & 50,000/- for indivisuals & if corparate wants to have a account they do not have
any limit.

2018 Mcash won the most inovative digital service award, it is for there inovative digital loan. It is giving
with the colobatation of the LOLC. Even the do not have an account in LOLC they can still get this loan,
this loan is giving based on the usage of data and voice package. This loan is giving Rs.5K to Rs.25K.

In 2017 they have started new journey with the coloboration with NSB, NSB I Saver. Peple does not want
to go to bank to deposit. They can save money via Mcash.

In following pandemic period, most of pensioneirs recived their pension via Mcash, they don’t want to
stay in the quest to get the money. Most of Government organizations are starting to use the Mcash,
even you can see in Dalada Maliga,there is a QR code on “pinkate”. Now charity also being digitalizing.
