Hi everyone, my name is Ana Cojocaru and I'm here to talk about cigarettes.

My presentation will be devided in three parts. First I'll talk about the first
cigarette in the world, second, I'm going to present you the construction of a
cigarette and finally, I'm going to show you the sales of cigarettes among the
world.
My talk will tale about ten minutes and if you have any questions please save
them for after the presentation.
So that concludes the introduction and now let's move on to the first part of
my talk, which is about the first cigarette in the world.
The tabacco plant has been grown in the America since the 17th century. In
1865, a man named Washington Duke from North Carolina began to roll
cigarettes and sell them to others for profit. In 1883, James Bonsack invented
a machine that could roll cigarettes and produce thousands per day. The
evolution of the cigarettes industry countinued into the first half of the 20th
century. Cigarette usage initially began as a habit for soldiers.
That's all I want to say about the first cigarette in the world, and now let's
move on to the construction of a cigarette.
There are four things we have to consider when we speak about the
construction of a cigarette. First, the tabacco blend, second, the additives,
third, the cigarettes butt and fourth, the cigarette filter.
Let's look at these in more details.
First, the tabacco blend which is the process that gives the end product a
consistent taste from batches of tabacco grown in different areas of a country
that may change the flavour profile from year to year, due to different
environmental conditions. Modern cigarettes produced after the 1950s
althrough composed mainly of a shredded tabacco leaf, use a significant
quantity of a tabacco processing by products in the blend.
Second, the additives which are various and combined into the shredded
tabacco are producing mixtures, with humectans such as propylene glycol or
glycerol, as well as flavouring products and enhancers such as cocoa solids,
licorice, tabacco extracts, and various sugars, which are known collectively as
"casings".
Thirdly, the cigarette butt, which is the common name for the remains of a
cigarette after smoking. It consist of a tissue tube which holds a filter and
some remains of a tabacco mixed with ash.
And, finally, the cigarette filter, which is made from cellulose acetate and are
biodegradable, but depending on environmental conditions they can be

resistant to degradation.
That completes the second part of my talk and now we came to the last part
which is about the sales of the cigarettes.
If in the first years, cigarettes were used only by soldiers, nowadays they are
very popular among people.
Now I'm going to show you a graph that reflects the sales of cigarettes
among the years.
The horizontal axis show the perios of years when cigarettes evolved. The
vertical axis show the number of smokers. The graph is representing the
evolution with ups and downs of popularity of cigarettes.
In first years, from 1865 to 1883 the graph shows a small growth which
represents the begining of cigarettes. From 1883 to 1950 the graph rises and
touches a peak, which is represented by a very large consume of cigarettes.
The graph declines a little, but it improves and from there it rises
continiously, representing the popularity of cigarettes.

As we can see, the number of smokers grew and it will keep growing.
That's all I want to say for now about cigarettes and their influence on people.
I'd like to end by emphazising the main parts of my talk. I started by talking
about the first cigarette in the world, then I continued with the presentation
of the constuction of a cigarette and finally, we found out about the sales of
cigarettes.

That concludes my talk, I hope you like it, you found it usefull and now I'd like
to invite your comments.
