DEFINITION/ EXPLANATION

1. Simple Past Tense

It is used for past actions that already happen. Simple past tense is the basic form of the past
tense in Modern English. It is used principally to describe events in the past, not only that it also
has some other uses. This event occurred at a specific time such as yesterday, last month, last
year and others.
The simple past tense (also known as the past simple or preterite) of regular verbs is marked by
the ending -d, -ed, or -t. Irregular verbs have a variety of endings. The simple past is not
accompanied by helping verbs. The verb form is the same for all persons.
2. Simple Present Tense
The simple present or present simple is one of the verb forms associated with the present tense in
modern English. It is commonly referred to as a tense. The simple present tense indicates an
action in the present time which is not finished. This can be a habitual action or a general truth.
However certain verbs expressing a state, such as be and know, are used in the simple present
even when referring to a temporary present state.
It is called "simple" because its basic form consists of a single word (like play or plays). For
nearly all English verbs the simple present is identical to the base form (dictionary form) of the
verb, except when the subject is third-person singular, in which case the ending -(e)s is added.
There are a few cases verbs with irregular forms
