DEFINITION OF WEIGH-IN-MOTION
(WIM) OF ROAD VEHICLES
High-Speed WIM:
The process of estimating the weight of a moving
vehicle by measurement and analysis of dynamic
tyre forces.
Low-Speed WIM:
Weighing a slowly moving vehicle, usually on a
specific area outside the traffic flow, under
controlled conditions, such as constant and low
speed (5 to 15 km/h) in order to minimise
dynamic effects.
Advantages
High accuracy
Can be used for legal enforcement of vehicle weights
Drawbacks
working day
The results may be biased due to the detour of overloaded vehicles
Police and other staff are needed for weighing operations
DYNAMIC WEIGHING
Advantages
overloaded vehicles
24 hours a day, 365 days a year of continuous automatic operation
Drawbacks
WEIGH-IN-MOTION USES
ROAD PAVEMENTS: Design, rehabilitation and maintenance.
ROAD BRIDGES:
TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT
Weight sensors
Presence detectors (usually induction loops)
