Solid to liquid

This process is called melting.

During this phase change, the ice gains energy. The molecules vibrate more
quickly and at the melting point some molecules gain enough energy to overcome
the attractions and move from their positions. When all the molecules have enough
energy to move, melting is complete.
The particles are able to move and vibrate more quickly and they also gain enough
energy because the substance absorbs energy.

Liquid to Solid
This process is called freezing.

During this phase change, water loses molecules. The molecules decrease and
move more slowly.
At the freezing point some molecules have lost enough energy to move so this
means that this substance releases energy.

Liquid to gas
This process is called evaporation.

During this phase change vaporization is an endothermic process, evaporation

takes place at the surface of a liquid and occurs at temperatures below the boiling
point.

The substance must absorb energy to change from a liquid to gas.

Gas to Liquid
Condensation is an exothermic process.

During this phase change the temperature gets cold and water vapor in the air
condenses from a gas, back into a liquid form, and leaves the atmosphere,
returning to the surface of the earth.
The substance must release energy to change from a gas to a liquid.

Solid to gas
Sublimation is an endothermic process.

During this phase change, the substance will be getting warmer and start to change
right away to a gas. the atoms will be from vibrating and will be close together and
then they will move apart and move more freely.
The substance will release energy to change from a solid to gas

Gas to solid
Deposition is an exothermic process.

During phase change, gas changes directly into a solid without first changing a
liquid.
The substance has to release energy to change from a gas to a solid.
