Government of The Republic of The Gambia
Gambia is a multi-party democracy republic within the
Commonwealth independence. Since 1965, Gambia has been
independent, five years later an Executive Presidency was
established.
Executive power: This power lies with the President, who is
currently Yahya Jammeh. The President is elected by direct
universal suffrage. Each President serves a five year term, and
appoints his own Vice-President. The Vice-President is in charge of
government business in the House of Representatives, as well as
the Cabinet Ministers from the members in the house.
Legislative Power: This power lies with the National Assemble.
This assembly has 53 members within it. Of those 53, 48 of them
are elected by the universal adult suffrage and the other 5 are
appointed by the Presidents
