HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF STARBUCKS COFFEE

COMPANY
The first Starbucks opened in Seattle, Washington, on March 30, 1971, by three
partners who met while they were students at the University of San Francisco. English
teacher Jerry Baldwin, history teacher Zev Siegl, and writer Gordon Bowker. The three
were inspired to sell high-quality coffee beans and equipment by coffee roasting
entrepreneur Alfred Peet after he taught them his style of roasting beans. Originally the
company was to be called Pequod, after whaling ship from Moby-Dick, but this name
was rejected by some of the co-founders. The company was instead named after the
chief mate on the Pequod, Starbuck.
But now it has extended in more than 60 countries and This statistic shows the number
of Starbucks stores worldwide from 2003 to 2014. In 2014, there were 21,366
Starbucks stores around the world, up from 19,767 the previous year - an increase of
1,599 stores. The coffee and snack shop industry in the U.S. grows year-on-year, with
revenues forecasted to exceed 32 billion U.S. dollars in 2016. Within this industry,
coffee shops held a 42 percent market share in 2013. In terms of brands, Starbucks was
the clear market leader.

customer value) including companys policy both social and environmental.
