HEDGEHOGS

APPEARANCE!!
THE HEDGEHOG IS A SMALL NOCTURNAL MAMMAL
,GREY-BROWN IN COLOUR WITH ITS BACK AND SIDES
ENTIRLY WITH SPIKES. THEY ARE 150-250 MM IN
OVERALL BODY LENGTH AND REACH A MAXIMUM OF
AROUND 1KG BUT THEIR WEIGHT CAN DROP
DRAMTICALLY DURING WINTER HIBERNATION. THOUGH
MALES TEND TO BE SLIGHTLY BIGGER THAN FEMALES
THE DIFFERENCE IN SIZE AND WEIGHT IS NOT OBVIOUS.

Interesting facts.
Hedgehogs were fist brought to
NZ to remind settlers of there
homeland.
Most hedgehogs grow up to 150
250 mm long and are brown
and grey in colour.
The name hedgehog was bought
in to use around year 1450.
The spikes on the hedgehogs
back are used for defence.

How are they a threat to us.


Hedgehogs pose a threat to our native weta,skinks and the eggs
and chicks of ground nesting birds.

In mid 2009, doc included hedgehogs in a pest
eradication programme on rangitoto and motutapu
islands in the hauraki gulf.

BEHAVIOUR
In winter, hedgehogs hibernate. Winter dens are under
tree roots or deep dry litter. In rabbit burrows or other
dry places.
