Problem (Gas Absorber)

An absorption tower containing wooden grids is to be used for anwibigSO2 in a

sodium sulfite solution. A mixture of air and SO2 will enter the tower at a rate of
33m3/s, temperature of 400 K and a pressure of 120kPa. The concentration of
in the entering gas is specified and a given fraction of SO2 must be removed in
the absorption tower. The MW of the entering gas mixture may be assumed to
be 29.1. Under the specified design condition, number of transfers unit
necessary varies with the superficial gas velocity as follows:
Number of Transfer Units = 1.05 Gs0.44
Where Gs is the entering gas velocity in kg/hr-m based on the cross sectional
area of the empty tower. The height of a transfer content is constant at 4.5 m.
The cost for the installed tower is $45 per m3 of inside volume and annual
fixed charges amount to 20% of the initial cost. Variable operating charges for
the absorbent, blower power, and pumping power are represented by the
following equation:
Total Variable Operating Costs ($/s) = 9.78x105Gs 2

0.1098 0.0244

Gs
Gs0.8

The unit is to operate 8000 years per year. Determine the height and diameter
of the absorption tower at conditions of minimum costs.
