PREFACE
In the past two decades new technologies have evolved that makes it possible to interconnect
desperate physical networks and make them function as a coordinated unit. A GSM system is
basically designed as a combination of three major subsystems: the network (switching)
subsystem (NSS), the radio subsystem (RSS), and the operation and maintenance
subsystem
In order to ensure that network operators will have several sources of cellular infrastructure
equipment, GSM decided to specify not only the air interface, but also the main interfaces that
identify different parts. There are three dominant interfaces, namely, an interface between MSC
and the BSC (An interface), BSC and Base Transceiver Station (BTS) (Abis interface), and an
Um interface between the BTS and MS.
This report deals mainly with GSM based technology and the various issues related in
designing a large network.
