PHLOS CH4 - Projectile Motion Exercise
You ate given a graph that ean be thought of as a multiple exposure photograph of a projectile
flying through the air. The time interval between each exposure is 0.4 sec. The task is to numerically
analyze the ‘photograph’ to describe the motion,
From the ‘photograph’ determine the coordinates of each position of the projectile (t;x, y).
Enter these coordinates into 3 columns in Excel. Now use these data to calculate in adjacent
2 columns the average x- and y-components of velocity as a function of time [ ve = Ax/At ].
If the acceleration is constant, then the average velocity between points will be the instantaneous
velocity at the midpoint in time. With this in mind, construct an additional time-column that includes
only the midpoints in time (0.2, 0.6, 1.0, ...). (The average velocities for a time interval and the
middle time for that interval should be on the same row.)

/ Now on a single graph, plot vy and v, versus the middle time. In words, deseribe the time si = a
() dependence of the velocity in the x- and y-directions based on your graph. We
“ Fit the graphs of vy and vy toa straight line, What do the fit parameters tell you about the 1 eA)

From your fit parameters, determine the initial speed and angle of the projectile, Do these
‘\ numbers agree with what you would estimate by looking at just the first two points on the phone
9) ‘photograph’? q w
Now plot y versus x. Your plot should look essentially the same as the ‘photograph’ from
” which you got your data, What simple curve best describes the plot (linear, quadratic, logarithmic,
lexponential, ...)? Make a fit and explain what the fit constants represent,
