Todays lesson is a groove i came up with to stop my parts getting overly tedius whilst playing an upbeat ska number.

This is the final groove:

q=92

The logic behind this pattern is fairly simple. The right hand part plays two '5 stroke roll' patterns then two '3 stroke roll''
patterns. This is then moved around three cymbal voices creating a fairly syncopated sound.
These are some exercises worth looking at the help with this pattern. In each part you are given a rudiment style pattern
followed by 2 examples of how these are incorporated into the above groove. Each rudiment is given two different rhythm
patterns as the start falls on different beats of the bar in the finished groove.

The above patterns are just exercises relevant to the groove, you should feel free to develop the patterns as you see fit.
I would also advise playing these to a click to get a better sense of the feel.

Next! Try moving the phrases of the 5 stroke roll around parts of the kit. I've included phrase markings to try and give
you a sense of how the syncopation sits.
First in patterns of 2.

Next in patterns of 3.

Now alternate between two cycles of 5 stroke rolls and two cycles of 3 stroke rolls across two voices.

So there you go, one spiced up ska punk groove!
