Special stitch notes

There will be one tricky stitch, here is a sample of how it is created.

Triple front post double crochet (3-fpdc) -- Yarn over (yo) and insert your
hook from front to back around the posts of both the first ],second, and third
double crochet of the row below where mentioned, and then from back to
front again around the posts of the stitch. Yarn over and draw the yarn
around the post of the multiple stitch. Yarn over and draw the yarn through
the 2 loops on the hook, twice. Repeat twice more around this same stitch.

*** in other words you are making a fpdc around THREE dc not one, three times . ***
These photos show a double version, you will be doing a triple version.

There will also be hidden and slip stitch aplenty in this.

Once you get the first section completed you will see how easy this is.

With this pattern you can use any yarn you choose, just be sure
and either use the suggested hook for that yarn or whatever
hook you're comfortable with.

For the photos shown in this written pattern, I used a chunky weight cotton with a size I
(5.5 mm) hook. Amount of yarn also depends on the finished look you are going for.

Row 1
Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 12 dc in 3rd ch from hook, join with sl st in beg ch. (13 dc)

Row 2
Ch 3, 2dc in same sp, (sc in next st, 3 dc in next st) three times, sl
st in st, ch 3, dc in
same sp, dc in next 2 st, ch 10, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 st, turn.

Row 3
(You may wish to mark this row to remember it is row 3)
Ch 6, dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each of next two st, sc in
next 4 st, 12 sc in ch 10 sp (Marking the 7th stitch as it will be
the stitch you're connecting to in row 6 ), sc in next 4 st, ch 6,
turn.

Row 4
Dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each of next 2 sts, sc in each of next 2sts, 3-fpdc (see
special stitch notes and photos below) around the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th dc of row 2 joining
them into one, ch 10, 3-fpdc around the 1st, 2nd, 3rd dc of row 2 joining them into one,
sc in last 2 sc's, leaving the four dc at the end of the row unworked, ch 1 turn.

3
Row 5
(You may wish to mark this row to remember it is row 5)
Sc in same sp, sc across next 3 st, 12 sc around ch 10 sp (Marking
the 7th stitch as it will be the stitch you're connecting to in row 6 ),
sc in next 4 st, ch 1 turn.

Row 6
Sc in same sp, sc in next st, 3-fpdc around last 3-fpdc st of row 4,
(going to break down this row into parts)
Tuck the second loop made (row 5’s loop) under and up through
the first (row 3’s loop),

Sl st into 6th st of row 3’s loop (the stitch we marked

previously), ch 3, dc in same sp,

Sc in 6th st of row 5’s loop (the stitch we

marked previously), sc in next 3 st,

Sk 4 st on row 3’s loop, dc in next st, ch 2, sl

st in same st,

3-fpdc around 3-fpdc of row 4, sk next 2 st,

sc in next 2 st, turn.

4
At this point you can use this single vertebra as an appliqué. Just fasten off
and weave in ends. OR continue on to make a longer scarf.

Row 7
Ch 1 sl st into the top of the next 4 sc or “hidden” stitches from row 5 , ch 1, sl st in ch
sp and then in top of ch, sc in same sp, sc next 7 st, ch 3 turn. (now if you can’t quite
figure this out it’s okay, just sl st in row 6 up to the top on ch. This will slightly change
the shape but may be easier)

Photo of end of row 7 in two colors.

Row 8
Dc in next 3 st, ch 10, dc in next 4 st, turn. (this row is similar
to row 2)

You will now repeat row 3 - 8. Repeat this however many

times you like ending with row 6

5
Different ways to finish your Vertebra Skull Scarf:
~ Fasten off and weave in your ends
~ Join the beginning vertebra with the last part of another vertebra with a whipstitch creating a
loop of vertebra of any length you want.
~ Use this like a mile a minute section creating a blanket.
~ Continue on to the next section to make a scarf with both vertebrae and skulls.

Making of the Skulls

STYLE LOOP
Ch 1, sl st into next 4 hidden stitches (just like in the vertebra
pattern. Now if you can’t quite figure this out it’s okey, just sl st in row 6
up to the top of ch. This will slightly change the shape but will be
easier),
ch 10, sl st in 7th st. Turn. This little loop will let you
put part of the vertebra in to hold it and create a large loop
for multiple looks.

6
Row 1 (this will now be worked on top of row 6 of the vertabra section as a
continuation)
Sl st in next 2 st of main scarf, not loop, ch 1, sc in same st, sc
next 3 st, ch 1, turn.
.

Row 2
2 sc in same sp, sc in next 2 st, 2 sc in next st, ch 1, turn.

Row 3
2 sc in same sp, sc in next 4 st, 2 sc in next st,ch 1 turn.

Row 4
2 sc in same sp, sc in next 6 st, 2 sc in next st, ch 2, turn.

Row 5
Sc in second ch from hook, sc in next 9 st, (sc, dc) in next st, ch 1, turn.

Row 6
Sc in same sp, sc in next 11 st, ch 2, turn.

Row 7
Sc in second ch from hook, sc in next 11 st, (sc, dc) in next st, ch 1, turn.

Row 8
Hdc in same sp, sc in next st, sl st in next 3 st, sc in next st,
hdc in each of next 2sts, sc in next st, sl st in next 3 st, sc in
next st, hdc in next st, ch 1, turn.

Row 9
Sc in same st, ch 6, sk next 5 st, dc in next st, ch
2, dc in next st, ch 6, sk next 5 st, sc in last st of
row, ch 1, turn.

7
Row 10
Sc in same sp, 7 sc in next ch sp, 2 sc in next ch sp, 7 sc in next ch sp, sc in next st, ch
1, turn.

Row 11
Don't sl st in first stitch, sl st in next 4 st, ch 1, sc in same spot, sc
in next 8 st, ch 4, turn. (don’t let those slip stitches fool your
eyes. It is centered I promise)

Row 12
sk st, dc in next st, (ch 1, sk st, dc in next st) 3 times, ch 4, turn.

Row 13
(Sk ch sp, dc in next st ch 1) three times, dc in next st, ch 1, turn.

Row 14 (border of skull)

Sc in same sp, sc in next 7 st/ ch sp, 3 sc in next st, (now working along
the sides and around) 2 sc in next 2 dc, work 12 to 14 sc up the side
(OR however many necessary to make the skull lay flat), Ch 1, fpsl over
next 4 st, ch 1, Sc in same sp, work 12 to 14 (OR however many
necessary to make the skull lay flat), sc in next two dc, 2 sc in
next st sl st into top of next sc.

8
At this point fasten off or continue to the next row to prepare for repeat.

Start of repeat if desired.

Row 15
Ch 1, sl st in next 2 st, ch 1, sc in same space, sc in next 3 st, ch 1, repeat from row 2 of skull
creation through row 15, using row 15 to continue repeat of pattern.

That little loop you created at the beginning of the first skull will be your ticket for other styles.
Push one or more vertebra through that to create one continuous loop. Or leave it and just twirl
the scarf around the neck. You can add this simple chain loop behind any skull to create a
different loop to hold for the look you wish for.

Congratulations for completing this pattern. Thank you for helping me bring
more beautiful skulls into the world. Feel free to sell your finished crochet
items but not the pattern. I would love a link, shout out, or plug as the
creator of this pattern so I can see your lovely piece.
