Woven Crochet Heart

Written and designed by Yvonne van Zijl @bokkyshome 2023.

Working as a volunteer at a daycare, I often organize craft sessions. Investigating what to make for
Valentine’s Day, I bumped into what is called Swedish Woven Paper Heart. While practicing it at
home, I got excited to try it with crochet. It appeared that there are already some crochet versions
out there so I was careful not to copy. I wanted to make a heart with woven little granny squares. My
first idea was to use the base of my Ndebele tiles. This worked out fine until the moment that I
picked it up and the little squares didn’t stay put even after securing them together all around. So
that idea went in the bin. At some point a friend showed me another crocheted version and asked
how my design was going. Well it was in the bin. She said I shouldn’t give up. I still wanted to make
the heart with mini granny squares. Obviously it wasn’t working with only the corners of the squares
connected. I found a new way (well for me it was new) to crochet several mini granny’s together in 1
go. From there I worked out the pattern and here it is. I hope you enjoy it.

General
Any yarn can be used for this project. Use a hook size that is recommended for the chosen yarn.
Using a different yarn and or hooksize will only influence the size of the heart.
This pattern is crocheted in the round ánd in rows.
This pattern involves some construction work.
Turn your work when instructed.
Starting ch’s do not count as a st unless stated otherwise.
Fastening off: cut the yarn and pull the yarn end up through the loop on the hook.
Mini granny square is called mini.
A heart is put together with 2 halves, each in a different color. Use as many colors as you like.

The pattern for 1 half of the heart

Round 1:
In this round you will make a strand of 6 connected mini’s. Make 3 strands in the same color.

In a MR, ch 2( this does not count as a st), [3 dc, ch 2] x 2, 3 dc, pull the MR closed.

Starting the next mini: ch 6 (this does not count as a st).

Sl st in the back bump of the 3rd ch from the hook (indicated with the needle in the photo below).
Place a stitch marker in the loop that is formed. I will call this the eye.

Ch 3 (this does not count as a st), PLT (see photos below) in the last dc made (indicated with the
needle in the 1st photo below).
The ch 3 will get twisted while doing this, that is okay.

PLT: take hook out of loop. Insert hook in indicated st. Pull the loop through the st.
Grab the loop with the hook.

Dc in the eye, PLT in the next dc (indicated with the needle in the 2nd photo below).

Dc in the eye, PLT in the next ch2-sp (indicated with the needle in the 2nd photo below).

[Ch 2, 3 dc in the eye] x 2.

Repeat instructions from ‘Starting the next mini’ on page 2 till you have 6 incomplete mini’s as
shown in the 3rd photo below.

Ch 2, 3 dc in the eye of the 6th mini, ch 1, sl st (the ch 1 and sl st count as ch2-sp) in the 2 loops
indicated in the photo below.

[Ch 1 (this counts as ch2-sp), 3 dc in the eye of the next mini, ch 1, sl st (the ch 1 and sl st count as
ch2-sp) in the 2 loops indicated in the photo below] x 4.

You will now have what is shown in the 2nd photo above.

Ch 1, 3 dc in the next eye, ch 2, sl st in the very 1st dc that was made in the MR, fasten off.

If this is your 3rd strand of mini’s in the same color, do not fasten off,
replace the last ch 2 + sl st with ch 1 + 1 sc in the 1st dc.
(6 mini’s with 12 dc and 4 ch2-sp each, 20 PLT total)

From here on you will be working in rows.

Row 2
Lay your 3 strands of mini’s down as in the 2nd photo above. Right side facing up.
Your hook is in the correct position to continue. (That is, if you didn’t accidentally fasten off the 3rd
strand too. If you did fasten off, attach yarn with a sl st in the ch2-sp where you just fastened off.)

Ch 1 (this does not count as a st), sc in the ch2 sp below (see the 1st photo below), 4 sc (the 1st is
made in the st indicated with the needle, the 4th sc is made in the next ch2-sp).

Continue on either short side of the 2nd strand of mini’s.

Ch 1, 5 sc (the 1st and 5th are made in the ch2-spaces).

Continue on either short side of the 3rd strand of mini’s.

Ch 1, 5 sc (the 1st and 5th are made in the ch2-spaces).
(2 ch, 15 sc)

Row 3
Turn your work.

Ch 1, 17 sc (use both loops of the ch stitches to make the 6th and 12th sc ).
(17 sc)

Row 4
Turn your work.

[Sk 2 st, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in the next st, sk 2 st, sl st in the next st] x 2, sk 2 st, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in the
next st, sk 1 st, sl st in the last st of row 3.
(3 sl st, 18 dc, 3 ch1-sp)

Row 5
Turn your work.

2 sl st, sc, hdc (this will fall in the ch1-sp), ch 2, sk 3 dc, V-st in the next sl st, ch 2, sk 3 dc, sc in the
next ch1-sp, ch 2, sk 3 dc, V-st in the next sl st, ch 2, sk 3 dc, hdc in the next ch1-sp, sl st in the next st.
(3 sl st, 2 sc, 2 hdc, 2 V-st, 4 ch2-sp)

Row 6
Turn your work.

Sk hdc, sl st in next ch2-sp, (4 E-dc, ch 1, 4 E-dc) in the ch1-sp of the next V-st, sl st in next sc, (4 E-dc,
1 ch, 4 E-dc) in the ch1-sp of the next V-st, sl st in the next hdc. Fasten off.
(3 sl st, 16 E-dc, 2 ch1-sp)

Row 7
First attach yarn with a sl st in the st indicated with a needle in the 1st photo below (that is the E-dc
after the ch1-sp), ch 1, then turn your work. The yarn end will be at the back if you do it this way.

hdc in the next ch1-sp, sc in the next E-dc, ch 1, sk 3 E-dc, V-st in the next sl st, ch 1, sk 3 E-dc, sc in
the next E-dc, hdc in the next ch1-sp, sl st in the next E-dc.
(2 sl st, 2 sc, 2 hdc, 1 V-st, 2 ch1-sp)

Row 8
Turn your work.

Sl st in the next hdc, sc in the next sc, sk (1 ch, 1 dc), 5 hdc in the ch1-sp of the V-st, sk (1 dc, 1 ch), sc
in the next sc, sl st in the next hdc, fasten off. Work away yarn ends
(2 sl st, 2 sc, 5 hdc)

The 3 strands are now connected on 1 side and a bump is added.

Continue to connect the 3 strands on the other short sides too.

Turn the bump facing down and attach yarn with a sl st in the ch2-sp as in the 3rd photo above.
Be sure to have the right side of the strands facing up.
Repeat rows 2-8. Your first half heart is ready!

Make 1 more half heart in a different color.

Weaving
I blocked my heart halves first. Especially the round parts will benefit from blocking.

Take 2 halves to weave together and follow the steps in the next photos.

Fold the halves with the right sides facing out.

Lay the halves down like this.

Step 1
Insert 1 through C. Insert B through 1. Insert 1 through A.

Step 2
Insert C through 2. Insert 2 through B. Insert A through 2.

Step 3
Insert 3 through C. Insert B through 3. Insert 3 through A.

Your woven heart is ready!
If you like, you can add 2 ribbons or a button and a loop between the half rounded parts as a closure.
If you plan to keep this color combo, consider sewing the half rounded parts closed a bit.
If you would like to hang your heart, add a small loop on the front half and a longer loop on the back
half if. Pull the longer loop through the small loop to close the heart. The longer loop can be used for
hanging. (See 4th photo below.) Adding a tassel will add to the fun. Secure the tassel through both
colors at the bottom of the heart. The parts will remain together even better this way.

The heart can be used decoratively (in the Christmas tree), it can hold a sachet of potpourri, use it as
a holder for your charging cords or use it to hold a gift for your loved ones. I would love to see your
woven heart. Please use hashtag #wovencrochetheart and @bokkyshome when posting your heart
on social media to be sure that I get to admire your work.
