Skull Gauntlets (revised)

The pattern is based upon the “lost souls” skull shawl (by Maryetta Roy)
and meant to be used with the shawl.
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/lost-souls-skull-shawl

About this pattern: Basically you make the mittens with a shell pattern.
In between the shells the skull is crocheted. To do so you have to make
room by decreasing a line of shells in between. The skull and increases
and decreases (shell) are in colors and in between you still have to make
some normal shells.

Size gauntlets
Small, medium
For a bigger size choose thicker yarn and hook or crochet one shell more.
For a smaller size choose thinner yarn and hook or crochet a shell less

Needed
Hook 3.5 – 4.0, 1 skein (50 gr) of yarn suited for the hook, needle

Difficulty
Intermediate

Stitches (used US terminology)

Sc = single crochet
Dc = Double crochet
Slst = slipstitch

Gauntlets (make 2, left and right)
Start: crochet a chain of 36 st, close the ring with a slst! You’ll start at the elbow side; make sure it fits, otherwise increase with 6 st.
Tip: use a bigger hook for this chain; otherwise it will be too tight.
Round 1: a row of sc or dc, what you prefer, close with a slst. (36) Continue on the RS of the work.
Round 2: Crochet 6 shells in this row. Start the row with ch 3 instead of the first dc of a shell, continue with 1 dc, ch1, 2 dc in the next stitch, skip 4 st.
2 Dc in the following st, ch 1, and the next 2 dc in the next st, ch 2, sk 4 st ,repeat 4 times. (total 6 shells or )
Close the row with a slst in the chain of 3, ch 1, slst in the next chsp, ch 2, this is the first dc of the first shell (Sshell) in the next row.
Basic Round: Sshell – ch 2 – shell- ch 2- shell - ch2 - shell - ch2- shell –ch2- shell -ch2- slst. You can repeat this row once or twice or more after round 2, to
make the gauntlets longer.

Starting with the skull

(pattern skull in yellow)
(decrease and increase stitches in green)

The skull pattern is situated above chain 2 in between the shells in round 3 (also in yellow)
Every decrease (row 5-10) and increase (row 11-13) is above a shell in round 4 (also in green) and in the chain 1 spacein between the dc’s or above the 1 dc.

Round 3: Sshell – ch 2 – shell- ch 2- shell - ch2 - shell - ch2- shell –ch2- shell -ch2- slst.

friendly skull: dc, hdc, sc, sc, sc, hdc, dc in the gap) (Start decreasing in this row)

Thumb and knuckles
Round 16: : Sshell – ch2– shell- ch 2- shell –ch2- shell –ch2- shell –ch2- shell -ch2- slst. (skip one of the gray shells for the gap of the thumb, so you make ch
2 (4) for the either left or right thumb)
Round 17-18: Sshell – ch 2 – shell–ch 2- shell –ch 2- shell –ch 2- shell –ch 2- slst. (repeat this round till the desired height had been reached)
Round 19: all sc or dc, decrease some stitches because the fingers are smaller than the wrist.
Crochet a row of sc on the thumb gap!

Maybe crochet also a nice brim on the arm and knuckles side and the gauntlets are ready to show off!
