INTRODUCTION

The Renaissance Period Mid 14 century to late 16


century

Italy is the birthplace of the Renaissance.


A country of great painters and sculptors, the
heiress of the greatness of the Roman Empire.

The Renaissance era promoted the rediscovery of


earlier classical philosophy, literature and art as
well as the discovery of new lands and cultures
The French word "renaissance" means "rebirth"

It is a kind of bridge in between the middle age and


modern industrial era.
Constructed symmetrical, elegant and grand spaces,
majestic and gorgeous, and harmonious.

Basically is a set of whole new architectural principles


were put in place and the old Medieval and Gothic styles
were neglected, and Classical designs were preferred

It is one of the most beautiful historical styles that


revolutionized European thought and philosophy.

The development of the ideas of humanism, and the


desire to demonstrate the power and beauty of the earth

In late 15th century people are now transporting their


goods to all over the Europe.
Where does the Renaissance Appropriate?
Renaissance interior design is relevant for both residential (house, apartment, hotel), and for non-residential (restaurant,
beauty salon, office) premises.
INFLUENCE OF THE TIME PERIOD ON INTERIOR
CHARACTERISTICS

● Restrained colors: natural shades of


brown, gold and pastel colors (cream,
light green, etc.), saturated accents of
dark red, blue, and yellow colors were
used
● Renaissance is a rich decor of furniture:
carving, inlay, gilding, painting;
● Symmetry, proportion, geometric,
harmony are the basics of style;
● Renaissance time interiors were not to
be overloaded with furniture.

● The walls should be smooth and light. It is better to use a stone or luxury fabric wallpaper for their
design. Frescoes or half-carved wood inserts (wall panels) are also appropriate.
● The floor can be decorated with large boards, expensive flooring, or ceramic.
● Ceiling: high and preferably vaulted, decorated with stucco or painting (scenes from the life of ancient
gods and heroes are pertinent).
● Renaissance style in the interior involves the use of antique furniture and decor. Things made of
precious metals, ivory, candelabra, carved boxes and chests, paintings in gilt frames, vases, porcelain
tableware had organic look.
● Furniture and home decor are richly decorated with floral ornaments, patterned with antique-style
images of mythical creatures and heraldic animals.
CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUE AND MATERIAL OF THAT PERIOD
MATERIALS USED DURING RENAISSANCE

● Stucco and stone are common materials


that were used in the construction of a
Renaissance home. Symmetrical design,
arched openings, classical columns,
pilasters and pediments mainly described
Renaissance architecture.

● The interior walls and ceilings were


smoothly plastered and surfaced with
lime wash. These spaces were decorated
with frescoes and paintings. For flooring,
marble and terracotta tiles, planked or
parquet hardwood floors were frequently
used.

In modern design, you can either opt for expensive
flooring or ceramic. Today several things still give the
impression of stature and grandeur.

Characteristics Of The Regency Interior Design Period
● Curved chair leg which resembles the line of a sabre blade.
● A technique wherein “reeds” are carved or milled into a surface.
● Caning is a method of weaving chair seats and other furniture either while
building new chairs or in the process of cane chair repair. In common use,
"cane" may refer to any plant with a long, thin stem.
● Inlays - to decorate (an object) with layers of fine materials set in its surface: to
inlay a chest with lighter wood. to insert or apply (layers of fine materials) in the
surface of an object: to inlay marble in a tabletop.
● Brass Inlay add an extra glamour and elegance to interiors. This brass inlay is
made by using pure white marble that is inlay with brass in numerous designs
by using modern tools.
● Upholstered - provide (furniture) with a soft, padded covering.
● Squab is a baby pigeon or dove while cushion is a soft mass of material stuffed
into a cloth bag, used for comfort or support; for sitting on, kneeling on, resting
one's head on etc.
● Damask - is a reversible figured fabric of silk, wool, linen, cotton, or synthetic
fibers, with a pattern formed by weaving. Damasks are woven with one warp
yarn and one weft yarn, usually with the pattern in warp-faced satin weave and
the ground in weft- faced or sateen weave.
● Rich Chintzes - printed multicoloured cotton fabric with a glazed finish, used for
curtains and upholstery.

CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUE
Characteristics of Sheraton Furniture

The X-­chairs,
‐ derived from the Roman curule and was the most common piece of furniture. It
was made of two pairs of short beans intersecting at a central joint and linked to a stretcher.
These chairs were known as the savonarola chairs. Often upholstered in velvet or leather, light-
weighted and portable. Other famous seating was the the Sgabello chair, with a octagonal seat
over a solid trestle support and a tall back.
The CASSAPANCA, was a combination of chest and seats.
Solid, massive and rectangular this piece was often
mounted in a dais. The hinged lid served as the seats.

The most important piece used for storage during the Italian
Renaissance was the CASSONE. It was also known as the
marriage chest.
The side panels were usually covered with colored or gilded
gesso built into reliefs, classical figures and scenes. It was

also common to be painted by a fine artist or carved.
The bed, also known as letto, was in a rectangular
form with paneled head and footboards. They used
textile treatments in their beds to protect people
against insects and cold weather.

The Italian Renaissance furniture were decorated with


care, they paid extreme attention to details.
Proportion was perfect and the classical purity was
clearly reflected in the details.

The CREDENZA, a rectangular movable storage also became
an important piece of furniture. It often had a oblong top over
a frieze, and two or three drawers, over two or three doors.

An famous item found inside most of Italian houses was the


long, rectangular table. Massive and highly decorated, with a
long stretcher between the end supports. They also has
center tables, with round, hexagonal or octagonal tops. The
bases were usually columnar, baluster or pedestal. They were
used in the center of the room, or in occasional events.
