Teacher Work Sample Project

Talking Points
Contextual Factors
My third grade classroom is in an integrated arts school in which the
arts (music, dance, theatre, and visual arts) are integrated into the
daily lesson planning and curriculum. Of the twenty-two students in my
classroom, one has an IEP.
Learning Outcomes
My objective was for my students to understand how to use their
schema to visualize a story without seeing the pictures and use what
they visualize to help them understand the characters traits.
Design for Instruction
I designed a lesson plan in which each student would be able to show
me their understanding of visualization and character traits using the
arts. They were able to work individually, in partners, and in a whole
group to become illustrators of a book and create tableaus of the
characters in that book.
Instructional Decision Making
The planned instruction was based on the Benchmark Reading Series
metacognition and comprehensive strategies that Kokomos district
adopted. These strategies were visualization and character traits. I
integrated theatre and visual arts standards into the language arts
curriculum.
Assessment Plan
Students were informally assessed from their discussions before the
read aloud and whole group share when explaining their illustrations
after instruction. I formally assessed the students based on a rubric I
made to grade their illustrations and tableaus.
Analysis of Student Learning
I concluded that the majority of students understood the story and
were able to explain the reasoning behind their illustrations with ease.
Some students struggled in this area because they didnt thoroughly
comprehend the story. The students were all able to depict character
traits using evidence from the story.
Reflection and Self-Evaluation
This lesson plan helped me learn how to integrate the arts into the
districts plans for reading strategies. The lesson was successful in

allowing the students to use their creativity to display what they

visualized and learned about character traits. One improvement to my
lesson would be allowing for a more in depth discussion about schema
and visualization before and during my read aloud.
