    Jason was sent to live with the centaur Chiron after his parents fled their kingdom. He was tasked by King Pelias to retrieve the Golden Fleece, with the hope that Jason would die in the attempt. Hera promised to protect Jason because Pelias refused to sacrifice a heifer to Hera. King Aeëtes of Colchis gave Jason three tasks - plowing a field with fire-breathing oxen, slaying the fire-breathing and spear-throwing soldiers, and defeating the dragon that guarded the fleece. Jason defeated the soldiers by throwing a rock to distract the dragon. At the end of the story, Medea helped Jason retrieve the fleece and they fled together.
