Tutorial:
Identify 3 texts you would consider for use with Year 4 6 students.
Justify your selection. Explain the criteria you used.
The story that I had chosen entitled belling the cat. This story was chosen for teaching the
students of primary two. According to the pedagogical principle of teaching, it matched with the
principle of age. This story was not too complicated that may discouraging effects on children.
With this a one page length of stories, the students can understand in simple words and we can
easily explain it with role play. Giving students a lengthy story will spoil the enjoyment of reading
and the sense of appreciations towards a good piece of literature. Apart from this, this short
story infused with moral value that provides opportunities for children to make connection
between their understandings of lesson. This story will be given as enrichments or additional
readings for the theme world of stories stated in KSSR. Moreover, this passage also encourage
the students to able to write with guidance of simple sentences as well as compound sentence.
The passage that we had chosen consisted of the conjunction of and. This story also enables
students to think creatively accordance to how the story describes in setting, characters and
events in the story. For example, the students can imagine how nervous the mice in carrying out
the activity and how the mice get the deterrent effect from the cat.
The story of The Flying Train by Janaki Sooriyarachchi was chosen as it fitted with the
pedagogical principle of suitability. This is because, the stories are appropriate for the age group
of nine. From the extract, we can find a lot of preposition in this story. While telling the
imaginative story, the teacher can focus on the teaching of preposition. This matched with the
standard stated in the KSSR. The KSSR showed that year three students started to learn
preposition. One of the learning objective of standard three are enabled the students to use
preposition correctly and appropriately as attached in the next page as a reference. With the
colourful picture book and also the fantasy world, this story will act as a reinforcement in study.
Variety colour will make the students pay attention to the storyline. The students like to imagine
something that was new to them. As a year three students, they should be able to tell a story. By
this, the teacher can train their speaking and thinking skill through this story. Moreover, one of
the basic process in classical conditioning, Ivan P. Pavlov (2000), is acquisition. From here, the
picture of train will act as neutral stimuli which attract learners attention. During conditioning,
the learner will acquire new preposition effortlessly.

Week 18

The story of The Fox and the Cat was chosen according to the content that suite with the level
of students. This play is not linguistically complicated and not too wordy. Moreover, the play has
limited number of characters and contain an uncomplicated plot. With only two characters in this
play, it will prevent the students from confusing. This matched with the standard stated in the
KSSR. The KSSR standard also showed two characters and with short dialogue. Please kindly
refer to the next page. Thus, it will draw the students to pay attention on the teaching. Besides,
this play also fitted with the pedagogical affective principle. The children are drawn into the
story, they started to like or dislike the characters by demonstrate their attitudes towards the
characters in the play. Moreover, through this play, the students will acknowledge with moral
value that was close to their daily life. The moral value is do not make fun of others, and dont
underestimate their qualities which may seem insignificant. The students will learn to respect
each other. With this moral value induced in the mind of the students, the students will
cooperate with each other. Indirectly, they will bring up the atmosphere of caring in the
classroom and enhanced effective learning environment. This can be proved from the Maslows
Hierarchy of Need. Abraham Maslow (1943) believed that the basic needs include safety and
security. Examples of security needs include good relationship between friends and teachers.
With the criteria of safety, the teacher will be able to shape childrens behavior in learning.
