When writing correspondence it is imperative that all
abbreviations are correct. Table 1 lists Latin abbreviations
that are commonly used incorrectly.

Use when accompanied by numeric values
Example: 8 ft.; 32 in.

Do not repeat when expressing multiple amounts


Example: 3448 cm.

Abbreviations can mean the different between a successful


and disaster. Table 3 is a lists units of measurement that will
be used in all science courses.

Proper use, and understanding, of acronyms is essential in
education. Table 4 lists the most common acronyms currently
used in gifted education in Arkansas.

Creating an Email Signature in Gmail


1. Click SETTINGS at the top right of your UALR Gmail page.
2. Enter your new signature text in the box at the bottom of the
page next to the SIGNATURE option.
3. To create the pipe (|) between words, use the [shift] + []
keys. (May vary depending on keyboard.)
4. Make sure that the radial button next to signature is checked.
The default selection is No Signature.
5. Click Save Changes at the very bottom of the page.

Any number beginning a sentence, title, or text
heading. Avoid beginning with a number.
Example: Eight children came to the show early.

For very large sums of money, use figures with a
dollar sign; spell out million or billion.
Example: UALR received a $2.7 million grant through the
U.S. Department of Education to expand its
Reading Recovery program.

Immediately precede a unit of measurement


Example: 32 cm.; 100 ft.

In written text, spell out numbers one through nine


and general numbers (dozens, a thousand).
Example: The organizations founders included four faculty
members and 21 students, but the group
recruited hundreds more.
Example: Fifty first-time entering freshmen joined the
organization last year.

Represent time, dates, ages, scores and points on


a scale, exact sums of money, and numerals as
numerals.
Example: 2 hr 16 min; 6-year-old; scored 1 on a 10-point
scale
Exception: approximate numbers of days, months, and years
