Overview
Once a crossplot has been created as described in Formatting Xplots on page 2-1, a 3D crossplot view is
created by entering a log or expression on the Z Axis tab of the Properties dialog box (see X, Y, and Z Axes
on page 2-4). As noted in Formatting Xplots on page 2-1, not all crossplot options (e.g. Functions) are
available/applicable when in 3D view.
Fig. 1 is shows examples of 3D views, and identifies the components relevant to a 3D view.

3D Xplot Cursor Tracking

Cursor tracking is automatically performed on the data under the mouse pointer and the data is displayed
in the Position dialog box. If the mouse pointer is on an axis plane, the co-ordinates of that position on the
axis plane are tracked. If the mouse pointer is on a volume element of the 3D image, the co-ordinates of that
volume element are tracked as shown in Fig. 2.

Fig. 2: Cursor tracking details displayed when cursor is on a volume element (cube)

3D Xplot Plane coloring

The colouring on each of the planes is done by re-accumulating the 3D data in each of the 2D planes. The
minimum, maximum, and average of the colour expression in each cell are all re-accumulated into each cell
of the three 2D axis planes.
The colouring will show the minimum, maximum, or average of the colour expression as entered in the
Display Value field on the Color on page 2-11 tab of the Properties dialog box. This may cause some
confusion when there is data outside the range of the 3D volume defined by the axis limits. Only the data
inside the displayed 3D volume is accumulated onto the three 2D axis planes. So the minimum, maximum,
or average of all possible values in the stack are shown but only for that part of the stack that falls within
the 3D viewing volume.

The same data displayed on a 2D Xplot may look quite different on a 3D Xplot due to the limits expressed
on the Z axis.

Changing the 3D View

Use the mouse, and/or Tools and View menus to adjust a 3D crossplot display.

NOTE To quickly remove the grids from the view, toggle View > Grid on page 3-17.

Rotate
A 3D view can be graphically rotated to any desired angle using the middle mouse button, or nongraphically rotated to any angle by entering specific rotation angles in the 3D View dialog box.
To graphically rotate the view
1. Click and hold on the display with the middle mouse button.
2. Slowly drag the mouse left, right, up or down to change the view anglesee Fig. 3.
To non-graphically rotate the view
1. Click the 3D View icon
(on the Display Bar on page 1-12) or select View > 3D View...
to open the 3D View dialog box.

2. Ensure the View tab is selected.
3. Rotate the view using one of the following methods:
enter the required degrees in the horizontal field and click the
vertical field

button, repeat for the

click on one of the rotation arrow buttons to change the angle in 1 degree increments.
click and hold on one of the rotation arrow buttons until the required rotation is achieved.

NOTE If multiple views are open, clicking on the Sync button will set all views to the view angle
set in the current view.

Swap and Mirror Axes

Use the Tools menu to swap X and Y, or use the 3D View dialog box to swap any combination of X, Y and Z,
or mirror any axes.
To swap X and Y axes only

Click the 3D View icon

or select Tools > Swap Axes

To sway any of the 3 axes

1. To swap any of the 3 axes (X, Y and Z), select View > 3D View... to open the Xplot 3D View
dialog box (or click on the icon on the Display Bar on page 1-12).
2. Click on the Axes tab.

Swap toggle buttons

Mirror toggle buttons

3. Click the appropriate Swap toggle button to swap the:

X and Y axes

Y and Z axes
To mirror axes
1. Click the 3D View icon

or select View > 3D View... to open the 3D View dialog box.

2. Click on the Axes tab.

3. Use the TOGGLE buttons to mirror an axis.

Slicing
The Slicing mode on the 3D View dialog box enables trimming of the data volume to reveal its internal
structure. This is a display function only, however, once the 3D Slice of data has been selected, data can
then be deleted inside or outside the Slice. Slicing can also be used to select a volume of 3D data for
highlighting.

To use the Slicing mode
1. Click the 3D View icon (on the Display Bar on page 1-12)
to open the Xplot 3D View dialog box.

or select View > 3D View...

3. Toggle ON Slicing Modered control lines and points appear on the borders of the display box.
4. If required, Hide or move the 3D View dialog box.
5. Select one of the control points or lines and drag to remove the required data from view.
6. To redisplay all data, in the 3D View dialog box:
toggle OFF Slicing Mode (toggle back on to redisplay modifications),
Or
click Reset Slice (modifications are removed)

Volume and Planes

The Filter on page 2-30 tab on the Properties dialog box is used to filter the data, vary the resolution of
the x,y, and z axes, set a display drop threshold, set a light source, and toggle the volume and planes display,
as required (see Fig. 1 for identification of volume and plane).
See Also
"Slicing" on page 4-7

Filter Data
Enter a filter expression to filter the display of volume and plane data.
To filter the data
1. Click the Properties button
dialog box.

or select Edit > Properties... to display the Properties

2. Click on the Filter tab and enter the required filter expressionsee Filter on page 2-30 for
detailed information on using filter expressions.

Accumulation Options
Within the accumulation section you can vary the resolution of the x,y, and/or z axes and set a display drop
threshold which changes the way the data is displayed.
Cells with count values (frequencies) equal to or less than the Drop Threshold are displayed using the
