Observation #2

Middle School Band
Instructional Observations
Unlike the previous observation, the room is set up in a more traditional configuration of
arcs.
Work to use your voice so that it projects more confidence and authority all the time. At
times your sentences come out a bit mumbly. Also, be careful about giving verbal
feedback to them while they are playing: use a non-verbal method (ie smile for approval,
etc)
Be careful about excessive amounts of finger snapping while you talk to the group.
While it is fine that you want to give them feedback and information, they may learn to
tune it out when you do it for longer periods of time.
There was a good balance of full group work and isolation work within sections of the
ensemble. Your feedback regarding the music was accurate.
The issues that you pointed out regarding dragging were true. However, what can you do
to help this without just saying dont drag?
Transitions in the lesson can always create opportunities for off task behavior. See if you
can minimize this by setting up the transition with a goal in mind.
Your conducting pattern is clear and easy to understand and follow. They are with you at
many of the tempo changes too!
