Baiting is the utilization of dropped objects for potential targets to find and pick up.

In the Iraq war, picking up weapons and munitions could be considered evidence of
insurgency. Snipers would drop weapons and wait for targets to pick up the
weapons so they could engage the target. According to court documents [55] quoted
by the Washington Post, the U.S. military's Asymmetric Warfare Group encouraged
snipers to drop items "such as detonation cords, plastic explosives and
ammunition"[56] then kill Iraqis who handled the items
