Who are the people working with

my child?

We want you to feel comfortable in knowing

who is working with your child.
We value our teaming system, especially
within out Special Education program. We work
hard to ensure our collaborating skills are
perfected. The reason? We focus on maintaining
positive and effective collaborating and
teamwork skills because we truly believe it
makes a big difference in the success of our
students. If we can effectively collaborate, then
we can better serve our students and help them
reach success. Please let this handout serve as an
overview of an important person on our
collaborating team, our paraeducators! They are
here to help support the needs and goals of our
students. They are very valuable members to our
special services team.
"The true strength in our classroom lies in
the collaboration of learners, not in the

What exactly is a paraeducator?

Paraeducators are individuals who provide direct or indirect instructional and other services to
students who are supervised by licensed professionals. The professionals are the ones who are responsible for
student outcomes.
Governed by both our schools hiring standards and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act,
all individuals must be appropriately trained, that is they are to have all of the knowledge and skill sets
required when working with each unique child.
Most of our paraeducators are in the classroom working along side our special needs students each and every
day. They serve as a resource that mends the each childs needs. Here are some ways Paraeducators assist in
the classroom:

They may provide more instructional delivery to reinforce and practice curriculum

Provide intervention techniques to strengthen areas students need help with

Review / provide specific instructions for the students

Help students find resources

Observe behavior of the student

Rewarding students as directed by teacher

Help keep the students organized

Are constantly updating their skills to keep up with student and school changes.

And many, many more

As you can see our paraprofessionals support our program immensely. We value them as team
memembers.
If you have any questions or concerns with your student and his or her paraprofessional please dont
hesitate to call us. ABC Special Education Staff
