Lesson Plan for Adaptive Art

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE


The purpose of this adaptive lesson is to practice and enhance students fine motor
skills in tracing and painting using adaptive dot sponges onto a piece of paper to create
a shape. The students who are able will be encouraged to write the name of shapes
next to them.

NORTH DAKOTA STATE STANDARDS


1. 4.1.2 Know the different techniques* used to create* visual art.

OBJECTIVES
1. Students will create a square, rectangle, circle, and triangle by first tracing it,
then using a dot paint sponge to dot the shape on the line and fill it in if they
choose.
2. Students will practice fine motor skills by painting dots with the dot sponge and
tracing the shapes.
3. Students will use creativity skills in deciding what colors to dot paint with.
4. Students will use communication skills when working with the teacher and
paraprofessional
5. Students will express shapes and color within this activity

MATERIALS NEEDED
1. Colored paper
2. Light table
3. Paint
4. Circle adaptive dot paint brushes
5. Pencil

PRIOR KNOWLEDGE / PREREQUISITE LEARNING


As this lesson is designed for the Adaptive students at this school, it practices simple
skills that build on fine motor abilities and gluing abilities.

2. Student dot paints with their choice of color on the pencil lines to create the
shape

Free time with the collected and appropriate activities in the yellow box or free time to
read in the room.

ACCOMMODATIONS / MODIFICATIONS

Extension and Enrichment & Additional supports:

As this is an adaptive lesson, used in the 1:1 adaptive sessions with students who have
extra specials added to their schedule, it will be easily modified based on the unique
individuals needs and abilities. Not only do the students have the small group ratio or
1:1 ratio but they also come with Paras to adaptive art to further reach and encourage
their participation.

ASSESSMENT OF LEARNING
Checks for understanding during lesson:
Formative: Observation of fine motor skills, communication, and use of the shape
template.

Summative: The final piece in considering the practice of fine motor skills and
painting techniques
