City Hall
and The
Padang
The PAP held its victory rally here after sweeping the
polls at Singapores first General Elections on June 3, 1959,
when MrLee told the tens of thousands gathered there that
day: We begin a new chapter in the history of Singapore.
It was also on the steps of City Hall that Mr Lee read the
Malaysian Proclamation on Sept 16, 1963. Two years later,
Mr Lee issued the Proclamation declaring Singapores
Independence from his office on the buildings second floor.

Union House
Unions were the arena of
contest between the noncommunists, led by MrLee,
and the pro-communists,
led by Lim Chin Siong, for
the hearts and minds of
workers. Desiring to make
the labour movement the
Governments partner
in the nation-building
process, Mr Lee helped
develop tripartism.

PSA
PSA
Modern Singapore has
been synonymous
with its port since
Sir Stamford Raffles
set foot here in 1819.
MrLeebelieved
PSA was crucial to
Singapores wider
economy and
constantly fought
against complacency
to ensure Singapore
remains the preferred
port of call in the face of
keen competition from
other regional ports.
