Procedure:
Students will read their library book for the first 10 minutes of class after they have settled into
their seats. During this time, the teacher will take attendance then read a book. (12 minutes).
The teacher will go over the days objectives and make necessary announcements. (1 minute).
The students will partner up and participate in a Think-Pair-Share; students will discuss theme
and evidence in partners, and the teacher will pick a few students to provide definitions after
that. The teacher will chart responses. This is done to help students by building background
for the activity. (5 minutes).
The teacher will distribute packets with lyrics for the songs with the help of two students. (3
minutes).
Students will silently read the lyrics to Am I Wrong by Nico & Vinz. Students will begin to think
of possible themes for the song. (3 minutes).
Students will listen to the song and watch the music video while continuing to think of possible
themes using the lyrics and the video. (5 minutes).
The teacher will model how to use evidence to support a possible theme. This modeling will be
accomplished via a PowerPoint which outlines the song name, possible theme, and evidence
for the song. Teacher will engage students in a discussion about how evidence can be used to
support theme. (10 minutes).
Students will silently read the lyrics to Hall of Fame by The Script. They will begin to think of
possible themes for the song. (3 minutes).
Students will listen to the song and watch the music video while continuing to think of possible
themes using the lyrics and the video. (5 minutes).
Students will partner up and compare ideas/evidence. Each partnership (or group of 3) will
determine a theme and 3 pieces of evidence. (7 minutes).
The teacher will distribute half sheets of chart paper and markers for each group to create their
own chart. This chart will display the song name, theme, and evidence for that theme. During
this time, the teacher will circulate through the room and provide guidance. (5 minutes).
