Learning Goal: Students will be able to:
-Write an opinion piece about a famous American who belongs on the Mt. Rushmore Monument. The paragraph
will contain a topic sentence, three details, transitional words, and a concluding sentence.

Procedure:
Students read an opinion paragraph explaining why Harriet Beecher Stowe belongs on the Mt. Rushmore
Monument. Students identify the topic sentence, supporting details 1-3 and their elaborations, transitional
words, and the concluding sentence.
After identifying the parts of an opinion paragraph, students then write them in the corresponding outline.
Students then consider the question, IF you could choose anyone to go on the Mt. Rushmore Monument, who
would you choose and why.
Students then use the graphic organizer to organize the information to this opinion question. After organizing,
students then use the list of transitional words to fill in their graphic organizer.
Students then write their first draft.
Students use a proofreading checklist to proofread their opinion paragraphs.
