‘Welcome to Mrs. Mesman’s 2" Grade Class!
‘As some of you may know, my name is Heather Mesman. I live in Hull, and feel blessed
to be teaching at Boyden-Hull. This is my 3rd year at Boyden-Hull. My first two years
were in third grade and I am now this is my first year in 2nd grade! I love how the
children are so eager to learn and still enjoy school and hopefully their teacher! I feel
honored to be at Boyden-Hull and I am so happy to be your child’s teacher. Below you
will hopefully find answers to any of your questions and reminders of policies and
procedures for our school and classroom. I anticipate a wonderful year this year!
Labeling: Please label everything your child brings. This includes backpacks, jackets,
folders, supplies, boots, etc. This will help my greatly during the school year.
Classroom helpers: Each day there will be a leader for the day. Their responsibil
will be leading the classroom and assisting me throughout the day.
Cor unication: Please feel free to contact me at anytime with questions or concerns. [
feel it is important to have open communication to ensure optimal learning for your child.

plans. This will be a great place to check for tests and reading assignments.
Birthdays: Your child’s birthday will be a special day in our room! Your child will also
bring home the Birthday Bag on their birthday. Please send it back the next school day.
There will be a note in the bag explaining what to do with the Birthday Bag. If you
would like to send birthday treats for the class you may. We will also celebrate
birthdays, for those children who have birthdays during the summer.
‘Treats: When bring treats please keep in mind that there are some food allergies. In our
classroom we have a peanut allergy.
Water Bottles: Your child may bring a water bottle to school. Use a water bottle with a
pull top lid. Please make sure the bottle is labeled and filled with water at home. We will
not be filling them at school. ‘They will be brought home everyday.
Eriday Folders: Each Friday | will be sending home a Friday Folder. This folder will
have your child’s work from throughout the week. Please take the time to go through this
folder with your child and then send it back to school signed on Monday morning,
AR Books: AR is an important reading program that continues throughout your child’s
time at Boyden Elementary. We use the AR program to aid in comprehension as well as
track your child’s reading. One of my main goals as your child’s teacher is to instill a
love for reading; I believe AR is a great tool to help your child become a better readerwho loves to read. Many books that you may not be aware of, are indeed AR books. To
check some of your favorite books from home, please use this website:

Specials: P.E. (please wear tennis shoes)~-Monday & Wednesday, Music~Tuesday and
Friday, Guidance--Monday, Art--Tuesday, Library--Friday
Homework: The only homework we will have in 2™ grade is spelling. Each Monday
our spelling list will come home. Please take the time to review and study these words
each week. We also encourage our students to read at least 15 minutes at home each day.
Grades: We do not have letter grades in 2” grade; however we do grade the work we
do. Your child will be graded in conduct, spelling, reading, math, handwriting, science,
social studies, and language arts. Here is the grading key that we use: E, S+,S, S-N.
These grades are also available to view online by going to our school website.
Classes: Each teacher in 2nd Grade teaches their own class the subjects of Rea
Spelling, Math, and Writing. In the aftemoons, we rotate rooms for the classes of
Science (Mrs. Anderson), Social Studies (Mrs. Mesman), and Language/Grammar (Mrs.
Zylstra). We have these classes two times a week.

Visiting Us: If you'd like to visit us at school, that would be great!! Our lunch time is
11:35 (Please give Laura a call in the office about which lunch selection you would like
to eat.), and feel free to join us in the classroom whenever you'd like, also. Please send
‘me an email or call ahead so that we can have you visit at a ‘good time’ in our schedule,
Classroom Management: To make sure the best learning is taking place, it is so
important to have an orderly classroom. This year will be our 5" year using the Positive
Behavioral System. We will be reviewing the matrix (attached sheet) the first week of
school. Our class has come up with the following guidelines to follow while in the room:
1. Listen and follow directions the 1* time they are given
2. Line up quietly; keep hands and feet to yourself
3. Work quietly during work time; do not disturb others
4. Raise your hand and wait to be called on before speaking
5. Sit in body basics while seated at our desks
6. Respect others
