# 2/ 5

Name: Hunter Drendel

DAILY PLAN
Lesson Title:
Skills:

Class Mosaic

Grade Level: 2nd

Students will identity the elements of line, shape, space, color, and texture; the
principles of repetition and pattern; and the expressive qualities of mood, emotion
and pictorial representation by recapping the last lesson and drawing onto their
piece of plywood. (25. A. 1d.)
Students will identify media and tools and how to use them in a safe and
responsible manner when painting, drawing and constructing by learning how to
work with their piece of plywood and broken tile pieces. (26. A. 1e.)

Overall Lesson Objective:

The overall theme for this lesson is Social Studies theme 8, Science Technology, and
Society, which states that experiences that provide for the study of relationships among
science, technology, and society. In this case, the mosaics that Isaiah Zagar has created in
his lifetime in Philly have changed the way people see the neighborhood and society, and
the technology used in that area. He even considered his medium a type of science with all
the different processes that come with making mosaic as a whole.
Day 2.
Objective One: Students will be able to take their drawing from Day 1 and make changes,
make it simple, or restart the idea process.
Objective Two: Students will be able to take the final drawing and transfer it to the plywood
they are given, and if finished early they can start to pick their tile pieces.
Objective Three: Students will be able to explain their plan and process of what they are
trying to achieve.
Daily Objectives/Essential Question/Academic Language:
This lesson would be multiple days, probably 4-5. Start from learning to mosaic, to creating
a mosaic, to piecing together the class, then explaining and telling the class why specific
designs were done the way they were.
Essential question:
Day 1: What does your drawing tell you about yourself and how did you use your
imagination to create something that you can call your own?
Day 2: With this final drawing can you mosaic in between the lines?
Day 3:

Teacher Activities

Introduction:

Student Activities

Students will come into the classroom, sit in a

group on the floor in front of the white board
for beginning instruction. Recap the last
PowerPoint and where the students are at with
their drawings. Discuss what is expected of
students for todays lesson and how far they
need to complete their project in order to
move forward the next lesson.

Students will sit in front and pay attention

to the board. They will raise their hands
when appropriate. Questions will be asked
and participation is expected. Recap is key
to the intro and students should be able to
answer simple questions about shapes,
colors, and the project as a whole.

Development:

Students will sit in seats in which they will

not be distracted by other students and
friends in the class. They will proceed with

and be given their drawing from last lesson.
Students have the options to stick with their
drawing, make a simpler one, or ask for help
to create an idea that is easier to mosaic. If
they want to start over, they will be given a
new white piece of paper. Start with pencil,
then go to marker and finish the drawing. All
students will have a final drawing on plywood
by the end of the day.
If students finish early with their drawing they
will have the option to start choosing their
mosaic tile pieces and items that will be
grouted next class. They can place these
items on their design to lay it out. Once they
are done all of their pieces will be saved in a
baggie for next class to start the grouting
process.

Conclusion:
As the lesson comes to a close, clean up is important.
Students will clean up all material they used.
Plywood and extra tile or materials can be put at the
front of the classroom back in the original bins they
came from. Students will understand the next steps
of the project for grouting and what to expect for the
next lessons. They will also be given the opportunity
to bring in items to benefit their mosaic and make a
personal connection to the piece.

the lesson and given instructions the
entire time of class. By the end of class, a
final design should be put on the plywood
piece so that they can start the next
lesson the follow week.

Students will be given the options to help

with cleanup jobs, and then group clean
up. All materials must be cleaned up
before students exit with teacher. Plywood
will be handled by myself, and stored in
the back room for the following lesson.

FEEDBACK NOTES:
I went through about two lessons in one day due to the engagement being so high, and kids
going through the lesson very fast. I had to add more back into my final draft of this lesson.
This wasnt a problem; I just was not sure how much they could accomplish. I expected the
task to be a longer process.
