Grandma

My grandmother on my moms side is Linda Mary Isola. She was born on July 21, 1941
in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Her parents were Raymond and Mary Glaholt who had three
children, my grandma being the oldest. My great grandfathers family had changed their last
name from Haakenson to Glaholt, which was the town they were from in Norway because there
were too many Haakensons in town at the time.
As a young child my grandma loved to ice skate in the winter on the frozen lake near her
home. In the summer she would swim in the same lake. She was a tomboy and mischievous
when she was a young child. At 8 years old her family moved to Portland, Oregon. They had a
beautiful old home right next to a golf course. In Oregon her hobbies were sewing, reading,
swimming and photography. The family took trips back to Minnesota every summer to visit
relatives. My grandma loved that they took new routes while driving there every year to see
more of the United States and Canada.
My grandmother graduated high school in 1959 and headed to the University of Oregon.
She started out as an Art major but changed to Education. At Oregon she was in the sorority,
Gamma Phi Beta and it is also where she met my grandfather, Allan Isola, who was also a
student. In 1963 she graduated and moved to California to start teaching and marry my
grandfather.
My grandparents got married June 21, 1964 in Lafayette, California. Her first teaching
job was in San Jose teaching 4th grade. Then she had my mom and my moms brother and
stopped teaching while they were young. During these years she enjoyed taking care of her
children, bridge night with friends, helping with Girl Scouts and kids schools, and sewing. When

her youngest was in 2nd grade she began teaching again. This time she taught special education
in Lafayette and continued till 2002 when she retired.
Family trips to Eagle Point, Oregon and Berkeley Camp Tuolumne are fond memories for
her. After both their children went off to college they moved to Moraga Country Club so they
could golf more. My grandfather passed away in August of 1999. My grandma decided to move
to Rossmore into a smaller home where she still lives today. Her home has a great view of the
Delta. These days she enjoys traveling with friends in the U.S. and abroad, family time, a few
clubs at Rossmore and walks with neighbors.
