Hooker chemical company and Plastics

Corporation dumped 22,000 tons of
toxic chemicals into the abandoned
project, The Love Canal.

By the 1940s, the US Army

turned it into a toxic waste
dump. During World War II,
toxic waste, including that
from the Manhattan
Project, was disposed into
the canal.

In 1942, the land was

purchased by the Hooker
Chemical & Plastic
Company and would be
used to dump chemical
waste into the canal. Within
10 years, the Hooker
Company had dumped an
estimated 22,000 tons of
chemical waste into the
canal=equivalent to 352
million ponds.

Creeks and bodies of water were turning

different colours like orange, black, and
sickly coloured green. They like were
cesspools.

Plant life was turning black and dying all over

the place.

Almost 300 animals died of diseases.

The contaminated air

made peoples eyes and
noses burn. The air also
had choking, faint, odors.

Babies were born with many birth defects

including deafness, autism, blindness, three ears,
and an extra row of teeth.

Pregnant women and children under the age of

two had to be evacuated.

Chemicals leached into sewers.

Thousands of residents of the Love

Canal wrote letters with complaints of
illnesses and/or other effects.

They built a drain and

chemical collection system to
clean up all of the chemicals.

They built large pipes that carried all the dirty water
to the sewers.

They took out all the dioxin and

chemical contained water.

Eventually, new laws were made to

determine where toxic chemicals
should be disposed.

Love Canal tragedy.
