PLAYING Bragging Rights

FAVourites
Billy Bragg, the Bard from Barking, famously
started out as a tank driver in the British Army.
Things didnt work out When youve driven one
tank, youve driven them all and in early 1982 he
found himself back on the streets of Barking, writing
songs. Drawing inspiration from the DIY ethos of
punk rock, he decided to take on the world singlehandedly, armed with only an electric guitar. Braggs
songs were more punk than folk and hes often
described his earliest incarnation as a one-man
Clash. His first album, Lifes a Riot with Spy vs Spy
came out in 1983.

Bragg was politicised by Rock Against Racism

in the late 1970s. He marshalled his songs in
opposition to Margaret Thatcher, supporting
the miners when they went on strike in 1984 and
subsequently founding Red Wedge, a collective of
left wing musicians who campaigned for the defeat
of Thatcher at the 1987 election. Throughout his
career, Billy Bragg has remained contemporary,
providing his insightful, clear-eyed yet hopeful
commentary on our times through social, political
and technological change.
Although often defined by his political songs,
Bragg is also a writer of great love songs. He
said I write about the things make me angry:
sometimes its the government, sometimes its the
girl. His songs describe the emotional peaks and
troughs of love, navigating the difficult terrain of
modern relationships.
2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth
of Woody Guthrie, folk singer and dust-bowl
troubadour, a prolific writer whose songs, ballads,

prose and poetry championed the plight of the

underdog. Bragg has a special musical affinity
with Woody a and has dedicated the first half of
his show in his honour when Woodys daughter
Nora unearthed a treasure trove of her fathers
unrecorded lyrics after his death, Bragg and Wilco
worked together setting these to music, creating the
critically acclaimed Mermaid Avenue albums. The
Complete Sessions has just been released, including
Mermaid Avenue Vol. III. Bragg will play songs from
Woodys extensive repertoire as well as the Mermaid
Avenue albums, giving audiences new insights into
one of the most influential figures in popular music,
a man who inspired artists from Bob Dylan to Joe
Strummer, as well as Bragg himself.
In the shows second half, Bragg will take a trip
through his back catalogue. In nearly three decades
of performing and activism, Bragg, described
recently by the London Times as a national
treasure, has crafted an incredible collection of
songs traversing the personal and the political. A
guardian of the radical dissenting tradition that
stretches back over centuries of political, cultural,
and social history, Bragg is a consummate performer
and gifted raconteur. His live shows, like his songs,
are funny, warm, sad and true.

need to make awesome drinks too.

Ireland and Canada.
- Plus, just to keep the boss happy, your bar will also win stock and a staff or customer
party to the value of $5,000!

including work with that group
Odd future, who got infamously
scratched from Aucklands 2012 Big
Day Out because of homophobia
has kerb-stomped the rule book for
hip-hop convention.
Riding on the waves of his 2011 mixtape nostalgia, ULTRA, Oceans career
is built on songwriting for some
casual buds such as John Legend
(Bieber too, kids) and collaborating
with heavyweights including Jay-Z.
His debut album, Channel Orange, has
been anxiously anticipated by critics,
musicians and fans alike. So, should
you buy into the hype? Yes.
Although Channel Orange debuted
at number two in the UK, it will be
a surprise if any of the tracks spend
time being relentlessly bashed on
the airwaves. The album is good
really good but is far from the bassheavy or catchy 16 bars that usually
break out.
Its meticulously crafted and soulfully
personal brave even. The debut is,
in most cases, a defining moment in
a musicians career. Aside from being
a step from poverty to regular eating,
its their first opportunity to offload.
More often than not, its doused in
an emotional rawness that will rarely
be repeated. Oceans is screaming
for attention, checking boxes from
reviewer to reviewer defined,
inspired, seductive and fresh.
Channel Orange is a poignant poetic
dissemination, wrapped in layers of
truth, delivered in a way that hints
at a personal affinity with hip-hop.
The lyrical content is poised, polished

and restrained enough to achieve the

one thing that characterises a good
musician: accessibility.
Its all very cleverly hidden in an easy
listening R&B style. The first couple
of listens will dance over the top of
your head. Youll groove along to
some sweet, chill melodies without
even realising its not a very happy
album. Thinkin Bout You evokes
comparisons with the graceful,
relaxing ambience associated with
John Legend. Then when you actually
listen to it, it reveals itself as a
bitter piece of prose, littered with
metaphors and even allusion about
unreciprocated first love.
Bitterness is a theme repeated.
Notable tracks include Pyramids.
Gliding from dub-step to guitar solo,
its a carefully compiled 10-minute
wonder superficially about hookers
(it also gives off vibes about the
exploitation of Africans that could
fill an essay). Super Rich Kids ranks
highly, possibly inspired by a fusion
of Supertramp with The Chemical
Brothers, it features Earl Sweatshirt
and is an ode for the disaffected
silver-spoon-fed.
Forrest Gump is one of the tunes that
pricked the ears of the oh-no-its-gay
brigade (fair in a genre associated
with heteronormativity). Its a
sentimental outro with a hauntedorgan lurking in the background
of some cleverly moulded beats,
echoes, whistles and sound delivered
to another powerful set of lyrics.
Channel Orange is a demonstration of
one suave mo-fo and a testament to
his fore-boding reputation. Listen to it
that includes you too white kids.

WAGAMAMA
MULTIPLE LOCATIONS, WAGAMAMA.CO.NZ

Chicks dig bad boys. Bad boys and scars. And guys
dig naughty things. In Japanese, wagamama means
naughty child. So if youre a bit of a nerd, trying to
impress that bad boy or naughty girl, take them out to
Wagamama for a bite or two.

REVIVE
MULTIPLE LOCATIONS, REVIVE.CO.NZ

Im not going to lie I love a good steak. But at the risk

of not getting five plus a day, hitting up vegetarian
meals is all good. Vegetarian and healthy food caf
Revive has a ridiculously good salad bar even
tempting ones like Thai Satay Noodles and Honey
Mustard Roast Potatoes are worth digging into this
winter. Your body will love you for it.

PITA PIT

Like the Subway of Turkish food, Pita Pit has healthy and delicious pitas
and wraps. I always see people lining up for Pita Pit which is a good sign.
Founded in Canada in the 1950s, a Kiwi on his time over there discovered how
awesome it was and decided to bring it back to NZ. You can choose pretty
much anything you want with a huge range of salads and meats (vegetarian
options also). Now, with four locations around the country and more due to
open soon its taking off like sweet wildfire.

Dont be put off by the name golf pleats are not a

prerequisite. It feels like you have popped a gazebo
up in your backyard, but this one has a bar, a sweet
dinner set up and an area of petanque. I kid you not.
Word on the street is their Friday night pitchers of red
and white sangria is tops.

HOUSE ON HOOD
27 HOOD SET, HAMILTON

My first experience of House on Hood was rocking

up one Saturday night to experience what can only
be described as a pub house party. Its the best party
house on the block. Atmosphere ranges from chilled
and low-key during the day, to rowdy front-yard
parties to cover bands at night.

NEIGHBOURHOOD MACS BREWBAR

Macs bars up and down the country are legendary for solid pub food
without clich old English-style country feel. There have been many drunken
nights out in Macs Brewbar, barefoot dancing on the astroturf pretending
MGMT video. Anyways fresh and funky, Neighbourhood is nestled in the
heart of Kingsland in an old converted garage site and they have it covered
whether it is getting ready for the big one or recovering from the night
before. Check in for some sweet beats with Aucklands finest DJs, then lax
out and undo the top button of your jeans with their hearty Sunday roasts.

H UN T E R

Joining the race for Super-flick Of The Year, Abraham Lincoln:

Vampire Hunter weaves another layer to the biography of Americas
16th president.

money. His mother died when he was a youngster. In fact, everybody

he loved had died. With no education and armed with just his mind, he
became the president and saved the nation.

It promises to end the run of the sleazy vampires that have clambered
about the silver screen for way too long now by arming Honest Abe with
an axe and some sweet new kung-fu inspired moves. Abraham Lincoln:
Vampire Hunter is a film adaptation of a piece of bio-fiction, conceived
by author and screen-writer Seth Grahame-Smith during his 2009 tour
promoting previous book Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

Twenty nine-year-old Broadway actor Benjamin Walker takes on the role

of Lincoln after nailing the famous Gettysburg Address in screen-testing.
He has taken on the role of Abraham Lincoln: president and human.

Grahame-Smith was led to fusing history with vampires by something

as simple as display tables. That year marked the bicentennial of
Lincolns birth and many of the bookstores on my promotional tour
had two displays: one featured books about Lincolns life; the other was
a vampire-themed display, including Twilight and Sookie Stackhouse
books (upon which True-Blood is based). It led me to think about
combining the two subjects.
The 2010 tome caught the eyes of Hollywood before it was even finished.
AL:VH producer and famed director Tim Burton (Edward Scissorhands,
Batman Returns, Dark Shadows) decided it was the type of movie he
wanted to see. It felt like it could have the crazy energy of the films of my
youth, which had a lot of weird mash-ups of horror movies.
What makes this movie particularly interesting is that the director hails
from Russia originally and here he is with his hands on the reigns of a
portrayal of one of Americas most precious historical figures. Director
Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Night Watch) was originally going to be
a producer on the film, until Burton encouraged him to take control
because he wanted to see Bekmambetovs version of the story. A big
plus was that Timur is from another country, so he provides a different
perspective on these characters and historical events, says Burton.

Whats dangerous about playing an icon is not allowing the character to

be human, Walker says. You must allow the character to be vulnerable
or even silly. Luckily Tim [Burton] and Timur were open to making
Abraham a flawed, funny and conflicted man.
The plot of the film unravels as young Lincolns mother, Nancy, contracts
a disease of unknown origin he knows its a vampire bite. Nancy was
paramount in instilling Lincolns morality, giving him the words, until
everyone is free, we are all slaves. This poignant moment in history
is also where he came to hate-on his nemesis, his mothers killer and
vampire Jack Barts.
Barts is played by Invercargill-born Marton Csokas (Shortland Street,
Xena, Aeon Flux) and is an addition to the films story. The film unravels
as a life-long shit fight between these two characters that evolves into a
greater war between humanity and vampires over who gets the rights to
the nation disguised by the US civil war.
Special effects were provided by Weta Workshop, but the greatest
emphasis has been placed on the action sequences. They were born
miles away from the USA in Kazakhstan, out of the mind of fight
choreographer Igor Tsay and his Acting School of Fighting Kun-Do.
The weaponry (axes, knives, guns and rifles) were all authentically
reproduced according to 19th century methods.
Girls, you can take your partner to this one so its got one up on Twilight.

Lincoln has been given the superhero treatment in this film. He is

presented as the USAs first superhero. Burton said, Lincolns entire life
mirrors the classic comic book superhero mythology. Its a duality: during
the day hes the president of the United States; at night, a vampire hunter.

WRITTEN BY Justin Fowler

ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE SLAYER
IN CINEMAS NOW

Grahame-Smith adds, Lincolns life story is an archetypical superhero

ON THE BACK of their successful North American tour, Sola Rosa are
bringing their summery sound to our rough New Zealand winter on their
first home tour in two and a half years.
Getting back into the country at stupid oclock the day before our chat,
producer Andrew Spraggon sounds weary and tired, but is eager to share
his stories from the road.
Originally scheduled to head to Canada for a one-off show last year,
things went pear-shaped and the band pulled out due to the booking
agent being a bit of a dick. But since making the right connections, the
whole thing turned into a happy accident, resulting in the recent tour,
which took them from Whistler, to Seattle, Los Angeles and everything
in between.
We were focused on Europe like a lot of other Kiwi bands and it seemed
where most of the interest was, but this just happened by total accident.
It was wicked and almost not long enough for me.
Aside from battling insanely hot weather of a Californian summer, the
tour was a success, drawing a positive reception from both first timers
and long-term dedicated fans.
We would meet people afterwards and found some die hard fans over
there, says Andrew. There were always people who had driven for
miles to see us. I still get surprised. Im too close to the music, so it always
blows me away when people are that dedicated.
Their sixth studio album, Low and Behold, High and Beyond, marks three
summers worth of writing Most of the writing is done over summer. I
write when I feel more positive and when Im in a good headspace but
thats about to change.
Previously shutting himself away in his Auckland home (it doubles
as a studio), Andrew says now they plan to tour more, and changing
technology means capturing the vibe and energy of a life on the road is
getting easier.
I have begun to write on the road a lot more, Andrew explains. I
wrote a bunch of beats when I was in LA. It takes on a different vibe
than anything I would have written in New Zealand. Its the start of a
new process. I think its great when youre on tour, theres not a lot of
downtime, you sleep for anywhere between four to five hours and with
every album the band is collaborating more and more when we are on
tour.
The album also marks a change in their sound, shifting away from the
reggae and Latin beats in favour of hip-hop and nu-soul.
I dont really ever have a direction, I just know what I dont want to
do, laughs Andrew which is usually a reaction to getting pigeon holed
by the previous album. Get It Together had a lot of labels pinned to it
like world music, Latin and reggae and I thought, I dont want to do
that again. I stopped listening to a lot of reggae. I didnt hear anything
progressive that I liked and with so much here, we dont need to be
another Kiwi reggae band. Ill leave that to others.
After the nationwide tour wraps up, its off to Australia in September for
eight weeks, then back to US and Europe before heading home for New
Zealands own summer.
So whats the key to keeping it going?
I dont have a secret, I just try to stay healthy, eat well and basically do
what Im told, he muses.

Like the very best puzzlers, Quantum Conundrum

takes a handful of simple concepts, mashes them
together, turns them inside out and comes up
with situations and solutions that makes your
brain beg for mercy. Snap. Puzzle time.
Youre the twelve-year-old nephew of Professor
Quadwrangle. Visiting your uncle for the holidays,
you find a mansion full of flying furniture,
multiple dimensions and a disembodied voice
trying desperately to figure out what the hell
went wrong. Before you know it, your uncle is
directing you towards a gauntlet that lets you
master the mansions four dimensions and
you start puzzling your way through the mindbending madness.
And there is a lot of mind-bending going on.
Within the mansion, there are four different
physical states that can be activated. The first
one is the fluffy dimension. When this is active,
everything become 10 times lighter. Everything,
that is, except for you. So you can activate the
fluffy dimension with your gauntlet, pick up a safe
and throw it at a window.

If it hits the window in its fluffy state, nothing

happens.
The trick is to switch off the fluffy dimension
while the safe is in flight. The safe regains its
mass, while maintaining its momentum and
smashes the window.
There are three other tricks hidden in your
uncles glove. Theres the heavy dimension,
where everything is 10 times heavier, the slow
dimension, where everything goes slow (duh) and
the reverse gravity dimension. Youll spend hours
building bridges with fluffy furniture stuck to the
walls with giant fans, riding safes into the air as
you turn off the gravity, or walking over furniture
frozen in the air.
Its very, very smart.
The presentation doesnt quite live up to the
games IQ. The whole first person view gets
frustrating being unable to see your feet is really
awkward. Also, the professors continuous chatter
sometimes leans more towards annoying than
helpful. Rooms all look the same and the story
stumbles all youre left with is a series of very
good puzzles.
But it is a very good series of puzzles. And the
games just so smart that, every time you play,
your IQ will go up at least ten points - or youll
have to go for a lie down in a dark room because
your brain hurts.

Whats the ethos of your store/clothing line?

I make clothes for women who value style, great
cut and quality over fad-based fast fashion. My
aim is to create favourite wardrobe pieces for
years to come and I have a commitment to
making them in New Zealand. Selector clothing
is a mash-up of beautiful silhouettes, vibrant
colours, prints and plains on mostly natural fibre
fabrics.
Which historical figure had some wicked style?
Deborah Harry had and still has it. Need I say
more!
What muso/celebrity has style up the wazoo?
Tabatha Coffey, the hair stylist. She has a great
taste in silhouettes, which really appeals to
me. Although her outfits are almost exclusively
black which could easily translate to boring
she wears an array of textures and layers, which
accentuates the line of the clothing and keeps
it interesting. Teamed with a shock of white hair
and statement shoes.
Colours/patterns big this season?
I have favoured tangerine and scarlet this winter
to give some life to the winter gloom. Also, I love
charcoal in lieu of black as a softer option for the
winter complexion and as a fabulous contrast
to make colours pop. Print-wise, its a mix of sun,
polka and graphic.
What are the essentials for a mans wardrobe?
I think as men in general tend to buy less on
mass every season than women, having a variety
of well-cut shirts in good quality fabrics are the
most practical items for a mans wardrobe. Throw
together with a pair of favourite well-cut jeans/
pants and a jacket, and voila would cover most
dress codes in New Zealand.
What are the essentials for a ladys wardrobe?
At the moment warm and weatherproof! Ideally,
a scoop-neck and/or slim fit merino top. Tuniclength tops and tights are the ultimate base
for layering over and for getting mileage out of
the rest of your wardrobe. They are also are a
great way to wear slinky layers. Also on the list: a
selection of cosy knits, casual/ work and special
occasion dresses, tailored pants and jackets, and
a fab winter coat. To top it all off and help give an
outfit personality, a collection of great boots and
shoes, and accessories such as jewelry, scarves
and hats.
Hyphenate three words to describe your style:
Chic-versus-street.

How did you get into this line of work?

As a young child I was given a magic set for Christmas and it was in
my late teens/early 20s that I started mixing psychology and hypnosis
together. I initially became a cosmetic scientist [someone who invents
womens make-up] of all things. I went to college cause my parents told
me to go because they didnt think I could make a living as an entertainer.
After two and a half years doing that I just got completely fed up with
it. I jumped into this full-time, so thats going back around twelve years
now and havent looked back since, thankfully.
The term brain-hacker, what does that mean exactly?
I dont really believe in mind reading and I dont believe in psychics,
so thats why Ive coined the term brain-hacking. What I do is use the
five known senses to create the illusion of a sixth sense. So our brains
are safes or computers, in other words. Some safes only have a two to
three digit combination theyre quite easy to hack into if you know
anything about safes. Other safes are electronic and have a 10 to 12 digit
combination depending on what they are holding inside and they are
very difficult to hack into.
Would you describe it as a form of magic per say? Or is it more
science based?
No, its definitely more science based now. With magic, its sleight of
hand. You always know the outcome is going to be exact. This is a
science and you dont know the exact outcome until you actually try and
hack into someones brain. It is what it is, which is reading peoples body
language eye movements, subtle cues, facial cues, micro-expressions.
Does that mean youre reading me right now?
Yeah and youve got a lot of interesting thoughts I have to tell you, Laura.
The viewers at home might want to find out about (laughs).
Can you share any? (Laughs)
I would say that you are a very obsessive person, almost compulsively
so. Youre a bit of a neat freak as well I would say you keep your CDs in
alphabetical order, also externally youre quite confident, but internally
you suffer from your nerves and you would want to work on that. Also, I
see a big change coming up soon with you, I wont say where that change
is because your boss might not be happy that, but there is a big change
coming up for you soon.
Wow, thats actually quite amazing. I didnt realize you were
reading me the whole time.
Yeah, I read everybody. Theres a cameraman and a sound girl in front
of us and one of you three people in my peripheral vision is cheating on
their partner.
And now they are all looking at each other like which one (laughs)
(Laughs) that threw me off! Im nervous now.

Obviously with your kind of work, even though its not magic,
youll still encounter people that are cynical. Is it fun to bust them
once youve read them?
Im a skeptic myself. I dont believe in psychics. So I quite enjoy when I
get a skeptic into a room because they think very linearly for the most
part. They just want to figure out how something is done and they will
go to what they consider to be the most logical conclusion, but the most
logical conclusion is invariably always wrong, so I use that against them.
You have a lot of celebrities that you do a lot of stuff with. Was
there a particular person you enjoyed working with?
Sir Bob Geldof was interesting because he was such a cynic when he
came in. He was grumpy old chap, to be honest, and it was interesting
to see the transition of him being a skeptic into a fan by the end. That
was kind of interesting from the point of view that it was a challenge.
Keanu Reeves sticks out too. He completely freaked out because hes got
a phobia of mentalism and magic, so he ran out of a restaurant and never
came back. He literally went, I cant see a thing, I cant watch this and
ran! It was kind of interesting to see him running away from all of his
friends and family.
Has anything gone wrong for you?
Things go wrong all the time, but as a good mentalist, you should always
have a couple of escape routes that the audience isnt aware of. You
always think that nothing is going wrong, but really things can go wrong
all the time. I remember one time I was on with Jimmy Kimmel in the
US. I was performing magic at the time this is going back around seven
or eight years ago and I do this thing when I pop a black-eyed bean in
my ear canal, squeeze it along the side of my face and allow you to feel
it, then I pop it out my eye duct and I lost the bean down my ear canal. It
went all the way down and stopped at my eardrum.
So for you show in New Zealand this week, what shall we expect?
Its a mixture of me hacking into peoples brains and planting thoughts,
extracting thoughts, comedy, mentalism, hypnotism, profanity, and
nudity. Dont come if youre easily offended. Its a night of escapism from
everyday life and just to remember what it was to wonder again. I want
to see people laughing until their faces hurt and in the same breath, I
want to see them amazed as well. To leave the theatre looking at each
other going how did he do that? So its a night of fun, but its a night of
wonder and amazement.
