re-imagine, re-wire and re-tune, but rest assured we
will be back in 2015 as only we can.

Dont expect these guys to f*** or rock you gently
the quirky, out-spoken, larger-than-life duo are
rocking our Kiwi stages until they break. Theyre
getting a bit older, making them perhaps a bit wiser,
but certainly with the same gusto for rock n roll they
have always had. A concert not to miss.
Wellington heavy metal band Beastwars is making
real tracks since they exploded onto the scene with
their self-titled debut album. Theyve just released
their second album Blood Becomes Fire and its
already receiving critical acclaim internationally,
being called the metal album of the year. Its a big
call, but to get on the hype, head to their gig and fnd
out what theyre about.
The Before the Destruction tour is bringing a little
taste of whats in store from ODRs Devastator mini-
fest. New York rockers Stray From The Path bring
their angst to our shores for the frst time, while
Melbournes Storm the Sky are making the leap across
the ditch. Rounding out the trio is Sydneys Stories,
with their signature sound like thunder rolling in.
She recently made an appearance on The X Factor
NZ and proved she knows a thing or two about what
sounds good (in her opinion). But the fact remains the
sultry soulstress has a voice like honey and shes not
afraid to use it. The intimate live show will get you up
close and personal to Hollie.
The capital loves New Zealand music and Puppies
has been home to some killer live acts. Tommy Ill, a
Wellington rapper, is stopping by on his third album
release tour and theres no doubt hell win the crowd.
Hes owned it at sold-out venues across the country
and internationally too. Identifying with indie/
electronic acts beyond the rapping genre, hes a
unique act.
Paper Cranes have been in studio recording some
new tracks and writing new ones while the muse
is still alive. Great North have been playing around
the country in April and May so theyll be tour-fresh.
Gorgeous alt-country/folk, Joseph & Maia have also
been recording and touring and have just released
their debut EP Roll Up Your Sleeves.
New Zealand has talent. We know this, we have seen it.
But not all of it has been splashed across our screens
in an overrated fashion. This performance highlights
some of The University of Auckland fnest songwriting
talent including Joshua Pritchard, Sam Allen, Vilette,
Lilo Peaks, Antoinette and Jasmine Balmer.
You wont fnd any mid-80s Madonna rolling around
on the foor here just New Zealand bands covering
great Kiwi music. Artists such as Rackets, No Why,
Jordan Luck band, Jesse Sheehan and Drop Dead
Redhead are fronting the set by and who knows what
will come out. Also with DJ She So Rad.
International jazz icon and saxophonist/vocalist
Nathan Haines presents his new album Vermillion
Skies live in the intimate seated Victoria Theatre.
Following on from the RIANZ Tui Jazz Album of the
Year The Poet`s Embrace, Nathans follow-up release
builds on the beautiful analoge sound pioneered on
this now classic album, but with the addition of his
own signature vocals this time.

French electro-royalty, Thomas
Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de
Homem-Christo, make a dramatic
return with this moreish slice of
dance-muzak pie.
The pair have been missing in action
for a couple of years, but during that
time their engine has been rebuilt:
bigger, stronger, and with a brand-
spanking new sound to boot.
Its Daft Punks fourth studio LP (If
you dont count the Tron: Legacy
soundtrack) and along with those
otherworldly, robotic elements that
have become a big part of their
modus operandi, theres a new-found
human heart to ft into the bands
most recent, cybernetic musical
creation.
Even more than that, Thomas and
Guy-Manuel have found a soul to
their sound that may just put them at
the top of the electronic-food chain,
much like Homework did back in 1997.
Although theyre still prone to
dressing-up like bohemian Robocops,
the group are more in touch with the
beating human heart beneath their
costumes, and as a result, their music
has embraced the past to become,
somehow, more current.
Random Access Memories fips a
salute to the likes of Chromeo, as it
plays up the disco-funk-electronic
vibe with beaucoup vocoders strewn
amongst keys, electric guitar and
some nifty, slick-but-slow beats.
Theres the obligatory range of guest
vocalists featured - such as Pharrell
Williams, Animal Collectives Panda
Bear and Strokes frontman, Julian
Casablancas.
Pharrell sexs up the place on his two
tracks - Lose Yourself To Dance and
Get Lucky, while Casablancas is Daft-
Punkd on the vocoder-melancholy of
Instant Crush. The New Yorker makes
the most of his cameo, wrenching
the last drops of rock-angst out of
his voice, before its sieved through D.
Punks tech.
Panda Bears Doing It Right is even
more man-vs-machine, with his
repeated lyrics matched by a robotic
counterpoint, creating a hooky song
that sounds something like a self-
help mantra delivered by Bear and
Professor Stephen Hawking.
The problem with utilizing such
gimmicks is that you forever dice
with crossing the line into cheese
territory. Daft Punk totally disregards
this, dancing back and forth between
both sides with the music, thankfully,
not suffering for it (Although, on some
tracks they get mighty close).
Perhaps the highlight to this album
is how beautifully produced it is -
sounding crisp and clear, matching
the content to the point of perfection.
Random Access Memories is
symbiotic, nostalgic, current, and
progressive all at the same time. Now
thats one neat trick.

Despite a slightly fractured
narrative, Norways most expensive
cinematic undertaking ever is very
much a flm of two halves (even the
soundtrack changes from piano
schmaltz to naturalistic, near
silence) with the frst part involving
Thor Heyerdahl (Hagen) attempting
to get to his journeys start line, and
the second out on the open ocean.
Its there where, naturally enough,
comparisons will be made with Ang
Lees Life of Pi. And, amazingly for a
flm that cost a fraction of Pis budget
and eschewed using a tank, it stacks
up pretty well visually, with off-centre
angles and on-the-surface shots really
giving the audience a sense of what
little stood between the adventurers
and the briny blue.
Some of the episodic encounters
look and feel similar, but what sets
Kon-Tiki apart in these scenes is
a nice line in gallows humour as
our weary explorers beards get
more bedraggled, their spirits
begin to waver and mistakes are
made (but quite how they confused
tomato soup with shark repellent
is anyones guess). Of course it
probably helped the flmmakers
immensely that Heyerdahl flmed
the voyage himself, footage that
won an Academy Award back in
1951. To their credit, though, this
is not simply a faithful recreation
or hagiographic biopic, but rather
widens the focus to include the
toll Heyerdahls obsession had on
his marriage and how his blind
faith extended to his less-than-
appropriate crewmates.

FILM OF ThE WEEK
ON SCREEN
First they left their buddy on a roof, then they went
out-of-control, full-blown crazy in Thailand. Now, its
third times the charm (maybe) for Stu, Alan, Phil and
Doug theres no bachelor party, no wedding, but
all bets are off as they go back to where it all began.
Whats gonna happen? Its a closely guarded secret.
Independent Kiwi comedy that follows three
criminally clueless college buddies who come into
possession of three cases of premium grade heroin.
When put under the heat of police interrogations,
each lad gives their own side of the story. Directed by
Scott Boswell, this Kiwi caper is packing some serious
heat and is worth a view.
Dramatic, heart-wrenching and terrifying, Kevin
is every mothers worst nightmare. Switching
backwards and forwards between a terrible, at
frst glance unknown incident, Eva tries to come to
terms with what went wrong with her son and if
his troubled personality is her fault. Tilda Swinton
delivers an outstanding performance as does Ezra
Miller in one of his darker roles.
Any child of the 80s will remember their frst Sony
Walkman or even a home computer (complete with
DOS). Journey through the decade when gadgets
leapt from the pages of science fction and into our
own homes. Itll be nothing if hilarious to see how our
world has evolved and developed.
The slapstick, outrageous comedy returns to our
screens with all new, not even screened in the
US episodes, premiering on Monday. This weeks
premiere, titled The Leak... sees James (James Van
Der Beek) go into serious training to be in top form for
Dancing with the Stars.
One of New Zealands largest flm festivals and one
of very few queer cultural events that has a national
profle among the diverse queer communities. It
showcases flms from New Zealand and around the
world to queer communities (encompassing the
lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, takatapui,
and faafafne communities), their friends and supporters.

Production designer Annie sPerling will be presenting
this week at this years biggest commercial art gig Semi-Permanent.
sperling has one of the coolest jobs in the world, designing sets for
commercials, music videos and feature flms. shes been outrageous
fashion photographer david lachapelles primary designer since 2005
creating numerous stunning sets and props for his nuevo- renaissance
fantasies. sperling also produces photography, paintings and murals and
has designed and organised over 20 mural projects as part of community
beautifcation programs around los Angeles. Many of these projects
have resulted in the art training of at risk local youth, some of whom
had histories of gang and graffti involvement.
Jetlagged, and in, err, semi-permanent transit, en-route to a photo shoot
for Janelle, in nYc, sperling fnds a few precious seconds to fre off a few
emails, including one to Groove Guide.
Groove Guide: What does design mean to you? When taking on a
project, what is at the front of the cortex for you? Are you in the head of
the client, the customer or viewer or your own brain?
Annie Sperling: to me the word means the look, literally the frst
visceral look. i believe in art and your environment. i believe humans
respond to beauty and aesthetics. My job is to make something visually
appealing. its a bit of a juggle. sometimes bringing in the client or
agency needs without directly telling the director (what im thinking in
my head) is a strange dance. ultimately, i try to make something bitchin-
i must stand in front of it for upwards of 12 hours minimally in front of
myself, my crew and the other departments.
GG: What will you be telling the amassed hordes at semi Permanent?
Whats the message you have for them?
AS: im seriously humbled they invited me... im planning on speaking
about my process and also the path i took to get to my career. i think it may
be helpful to would-be artists to know i did not have an exact plan! But
the road became the plan! i started, initially, as a scenic painter - which
has no relation to current my job. However, this background has proved
invaluable for my knowledge of process. it affords me budgeting skills
and good communication to get the results i want for the look of my sets.
My background is in photography and fne art- mostly painting. i was
infuenced majorly by music, specifcally rock n roll. Movies, too and
travel is the pearl in my knowledge pool of styles.
Meeting inspiring people like david lachapelle was a major turning
point in my career- one that happened quite unexpectedly. it was a
strange meeting, in a fantasy remodel in the Hollywood Hills. He was
using my remodel as a location. that was our frst meeting.
GG: Your fashion work is very ultra-surreal, ultra-glam, glossy, ironic.
AS: i do have lots of cynicism for the world- but it is strangely coupled
with a true love for Art. i think when i am doing my job my punk rock
upbringing seeps through- i cannot take a commercial that seriously.
Were selling products, no matter how you elevate it. (My editorial work)
has more freedom and irony- more realism and surrealism- this is where
i can really play and have fun.
irony is one word (to describe my work). there is a love of things that
make our world work- the electric cords and vents the mundane make
the surreal even trippier. All these things have a strange resonance to the
eye and i think that is what you are seeing.
GG: tell me about your public murals project. i read that you were
seeking damages from Heineken, who desecrated one of your murals
our lady of iguanas (an iconic image in downtown lA).
AS: My, youve done your research! the mural in question is an old
one i made with these kids- a couple of whom dropped out of gangs
as a result of this (mural making) program. Many, as adults, still live
in the neighbourhood. im seeking ($250K in) damages because i was
p***ed that a big corporation covered the wall- which is 2 stories high
with an advert. the law is they must notify the artist - if you destroy
or use someones art there are consequences. i am trying to get funds
to refurbish the wall and rework the mural using some of the original
painters. it sounds greedy but it is the principal for me.
GG: now, youre not just a commercial artist with a punk aesthetic.
turns out you also collaborate with a local club - lucha Va Voom
Burlesque dancing, Mexican Wrestling and standup comedy. How did
you get to be mixed up in this? is it true that youve wrestled yourself?
AS: i did wrestle with a burlesque star - Kitten de Ville - against the
luchadores los cHiVos de oro- the goats of gold! lucha VaVoom
is a fantastic show that plays to a 1000 capacity crowd in an old deco
theatre in downtown lA. Kitten and i danced and wrestled, had we
some serious moves! i love Mexican culture and was thrilled to learn
some tricks- its friggin hard! My body was a rock when i wrestled! ive
been a burlesque dancer for many years and produced a really crazy
show with Kitten called rock n roll strip show. i dont usually talk
about both things designing and dancing - although lachapelle loVes
to tell the agency i am a stripper!

in 2009, tHe world was introduced to the party of a lifetime shots,
strippers, dental care and a tiger in the bathroom. in 2011, we were
willingly dragged through the seedy underworld of thailand only to
awaken from a night we would rather forget. now, The Hangover Part
III ties up all those loose ends, puts drunken grudges to bed and sets
the record straight.
The Hangover Part III is the epic conclusion to a seemingly never-ending
journey of mayhem and bad decisions, in which the guys must fnish what
they started by going back to where it all began: las Vegas. And like its
earlier flms, things never go according to plan. But with no wedding, no
bachelor party and no limits, what is in store for the fnal installment?
Were going for a truly epic fnish, explains director and writer todd
Phillips. With the plot a closely guarded secret and the trailer refusing to
give too much away, one thing is clear what the boys thought happened
in Vegas was only the half of it, which they are about to discover in ways
that the flmmakers believe should surprise audiences as much as it sur-
prises the guys.
theres a lot of action and comedy, a heist, a road trip, and an element of
mystery, too, as we touch on certain things that werent explored before
but were always part of the undercurrent of the two previous flms,
Phillips continues. it brings everything together and wraps it up with an
ending that follows its own logic.
screenwriter craig Mazin, who frst collaborated with Phillips on the
script for The Hangover Part II, recounts how they reached back to the two
prior outings to prime that logic.
We uncovered a chain of unfnished business that arcs through all three
movies for a fnal story that doesnt just end on its own, but ends all three,
he says. something happened in the beginning, although few caught its
signifcance, and that thing is going to come back to haunt the guys and
start them down a path of what will be, in many ways, their most diffcult
and challenging journey of all.
designed as a quest rather than the forensic investigations that went
before, Part III shakes up the morning-after structure of its predecessors
while still delivering plenty of laugh-out-loud and what-the-hell moments
to keep moviegoers on the edge of their seats.
But rather than memory loss, the fnal chapter hinges on clarity and things
coming into full focus. its not about a specifc hangover this time but
harkens back to the original that mother-of-all hangovers, triggered by
Alan, which set all of this into motion six years ago in ways they couldnt
imagine. the new formula is designed to shake up the tried and true plot of
the frst two, but also incorporate fans favourite elements as well.
Bradley cooper, returning as high school english teacher and unoffcial
pack leader Phil, says, there are little story points we maybe glanced by
in the original that become pivotal pieces in the larger whole. speaking as
a fan, myself, watching these movies, the best part and certainly the fun-
niest is putting it all together.
Part III does not shy away from the dark side either the better to give its
humor a sharper edge, Phillips feels.
With us it always starts with darkness, because that heightens the com-
edy. Plus, it just gets more interesting and more real as we bring them into
darker places and amp up the tension. its essentially a fsh-out-of-water
story for these guys who dont belong in the situation theyve been thrown
into, so the fun is in watching them struggle and trip their way through it.
The Hangover Part III reunites stars Bradley cooper, ed Helms, Zach
galifanakis and Justin Bartha as Phil, stu, Alan and doug. Also return-
ing to the cast are Ken Jeong as leslie chow; Heather graham as stus
frst wife, Jade; and Jeffrey tambor as Alans father, sid. Joining the
ensemble for the frst time is John goodman, starring as the guys new
nightmare, Marshall.

More horror stories should be set on tropical
islands. There is nothing quite like scaring
yourself witless while gazing at sunny beaches
and lush palm fronds. The juxtaposition unnerves
and thats exactly what horror is supposed to do.
Dead Island: Riptide is Deep Silvers second stab
at island horror. It follows on from 2011s Dead
Island, a decent zombie title that whet gamers
appetites at the peak of the undead gaming craze.
Much like its predecessor, Riptide is a whack-a-
mole zombie survival horror title at its core.
You play as one of four survivors from the original
game (ex-football jock Logan, feisty aborigine
bodyguard Purna, police offcer Xian Mei, or failed
one-hit-wonder rap star, Sam B). Riptide also
introduces a ffth character, the mysterious ADF
soldier John Morgan. Each character has different
play styles and specialities, for example, Sam B is
a hit with blunt weapons and Xian Mei cuts a fne
fgure with blades.
The story begins right where Dead Island left off.
Your fabulous four have managed to fght their
way through hordes of infected beachgoers and
have fnally made it off the island. After being
intercepted by a military patrol boat they thought
they were home safe and sound. They werent.
Quelle horreur.
There are parts of Riptide that are genuinely
enjoyable. As an RPG experience it has enough
depth to keep you entertained. For those with
the patience and the inclination there are
many hidden gems, quests and experiences to
play through. This is supplemented by a decent
item and skill tree system that gives you real
ownership of your characters. And there is the
ability for you to call in friends to play the game
cooperatively over the net (which is the only way
to play survival horror games).
If youre an avid collector of zombie games, and
you had the best time of your life playing Dead
Island, you are probably going to want to give
Riptide a decent playthrough. If you enjoyed it
before, odds are you will enjoy it the second time,
too. Its not amazing, but it doesnt seem like thats
what the developers were shooting for, either.
One for the fans.

celeBrAting Your 10-YeAr anniversary is remarkable milestone
for any rock band, but as Airbourne front man Joel oKeeffe explains
its no easy road to get to where they are now the journey to the top is a
constant climb.
its never ending, its a long way to the top and it never feels like you get
to the top for us. [We see it] as hills, you take a hill, then another, then
another and you keep taking hills, he says.
the latest is their new album, Black Dog Barking, which he tells me is
completed and will be available on the vinyl, for download and on cd.
on the title, oKeeffe says, its [about] the black dog thats been on your
back the whole way. its what gets us through, a lot of doors have been
shut and a lot bullshit happens.
despite the bull, he says playing in rock band is a good time. one of
those was life a lesson he learnt that resulted in a trip to the hospital
where oKeeffe ended up playing a childrens castle.
When someone offers you a drink and you end up in a childs play
castle, says oKeeffe, trying to play a game where youre a knight, and
youre the only one in there at 3am. [the lesson is] dont accept drinks
from strangers in everton [england].
Most of the bull stems from politics.
We went to play one gig and they said there was a 92 decibel (db) limit
and we thought What the fuck? it was going to be 108db and they said if
we go over theyll call the cops. so we told them to call them.
its these politics that oKeeffe says are damaging rock n roll.
there are a lot of things at the moment that are against rock n roll
theres a stepping stone pub [for example] that bands play and itll be
their frst show and their frst chance to show themselves to people
then a high rise apartment comes along and someone in that high rise
apartment, 20 foors above this little rock pub, complains about the noise
coming from it.
in the end, he laments, the government get involved and the pub ends
up getting shut down because you cant turn down rock n roll and its
a david verses goliath battle, and goliath always wins because he has
more money, says oKeeffe.
oKeeffe says that bull happens off the road too, before he quotes
Winston churchill and says, if youre going through hell, keep going.
even though Airbourne are bigger than ever, the band have kept the
same mindset to writing songs and say the amount of people paying
attention doesnt bother them.
Weve got the same mindset. We think about the crowd, what do they
want to hear?... And we think about what we want to say, what kicks the
most ass, and whats the deepest and fastest way to get to that point.
For the new record, the band wrote 40 songs and of those they chose
the best 10. oKeeffe says, each song had to earn its place. the track
Hungry was in a similar vein to another song. But we put that one on
[Hungry] because being on the road, we still feel like the band in a van,
that hasnt changed.
Black Dog Barking also has a remixed and remastered version of their
song ready to rock, which was released 10 years ago, and has been put
along side the new track rock and roll.
