Students will be able to recognize and explain the process of the water cycle as evidenced
through a note taking umbrella and a culminating water cycle diagram.

Development of Lesson

Pre-Teaching activities-Classroom modification:

Students will be in their seats working on their project. Students will be gathered in the
front for the hook and the anticipatory set.
Describe the sequence of the lesson. Provide adequate detail so that the College
supervisor or cooperating teacher can see how your lesson will develop.
Introduction Anticipatory Set
I have a question for you second graders. Did Dinosaurs drink the same water that we
are?
Students will think share pair and discuss whether or not dinosaurs drank the same water
as us.
The teacher will read the book Did Dinosaurs Drink the Same Water as Us and model a
think aloud about what the water cycle is throughout the book.
Today we will be learning about the water cycle. The water cycle is how water travels
through different stages. It is always on a journey! Water is also a non-renewable
resource. That is a very big and important word. Let's say it together......... A nonrenewable resource is something that we can never replace. We cannot create any new
water but water is always in motion going through the water cycle.
Students will stay seated on the carpet area near the Smart Board.

Methods/Procedures -Modeling /demonstrating, checking for understanding, guided

practice
Student will watch the YouTube video listed below to learn about the water cycle.
There are three stages of the water cycle we will be learning about today. There
is: precipitation, condensation, evaporation and accumulation. There are some
other phases as well but we will just focus on the bug four.
Precipitation is when water falls from the sky. There are many types of
precipitation please turn to an elbow buddy and whisper at least one form of
precipitation.
Students will then share forms of precipitation such as: rain, snow, sleet, hail etc.
Once the water is on Earth, it is accumulating, or collecting in places like rivers,
oceans, lakes and even on the ground!
Eventually the sun heats up the water and it evaporates into the sky. When water
evaporates, it turns into a gas.
Once the water is in the sky it condenses into clouds. We can also see
condensation here on Earth as well. What happens when you leave a cold glass of
water out on a sunny day.
Using the think share pair method students will discuss that they see water on the
outside of the glass.
We see condensation on the glass. When that happens in the sky, it makes
clouds.
There is no first step in the water cycle but it cannot jump all over the place. We
are going to create a water cycle umbrella to show us the different steps.

The teacher will pass out construction paper and colored pencils.
The teacher will then ask students to use the tracers to create their umbrellas and
cut each section out.
The teacher will show the finished product and create one with the students.
The students will write precipitation on the first part of the umbrella. They will
draw a picture on the front showing what precipitation is on the back they will
write precipitation is water falling from the sky
On the next flap students will write accumulation. They will draw water
accumulating and on the back write water stays on Earth
The next flap will be evaporation. Students will draw a picture with arrows of
water going up to the sky and write on the back water is heated up by the sun and
goes into the sky as water vapor.
The next flap will be condensation students will draw a cloud on the front on the
back students will write water vapor in the sky turns into clouds
Student Work Period- Independent Practice
o Now that we know what the water cycle is, we are going to use the resource we
created to fill out our water cycle worksheet.
o The teacher will pass out the worksheet and let students fill it out. The teacher
will facilitate by walking around and assessing student knowledge.
Accommodations/Adaptations
Students are encouraged to work together to help one another.
I will provide pre-made umbrellas for some students.
I will allow students to cut and paste definitions on their papers.
Assessment/Evaluation
The student will learn the water cycle process as evidenced by their creation of a
water cycle umbrella and water cycle diagram.
V.

Closure
Do we drink the same water as dinosaurs?
Students will use the think share pair method to discuss how water is never recreated and moves
through the water cycle. The teacher will have students write or draw a picture of what they
learned on a sticky note and put it on the back filing cabinet.
Please clean of your desks and recycle all paper scraps so we can move to our next lesson.

Water Cycle Diagram Worksheet
Did a Dinosaur Drink This Water- Robert Wells
Another fun and educational title from Robert E. Wells! This title covers a lot of
ground, all related to the earth's water supply. About half the book is devoted to
the water cycle, with the main characters flying around in a odd little helicopter to
see the water cycle in action.
