Where I come from, a womans face is her husbands business only. (p. 70 of a
thousand splendid suns). This quote pertains to mariem covering up do to Rasheeds beliefs of
woman. Before Mariam covered more of herself up Rasheed made it very clear time and time
again that he does not appreciate woman who show their knees and faces with makeup .
Rasheed beliefs are taken to heart to him so when he says this to him it is fine, however
to Mariam this is something new she is hearing from a new person she barely knows and recently
married. This obviously causes some conflict for Miriam as she is not used to these customs. She
begins to trip and feel suffocated in the outfit Rasheed buys for her. As well as the lack of seeing
is causing her problems to get around as she is seeing threw a mess.
This will obviously begin to cause her problems as it takes time for anyone to get used to
anything. What the item of clothing is called that she was given was a burqa. A burqa is a long
dress from head to feet. Their is a mesh to separate the outside world from the woman(this case
girl) from each other.
During the time mariem is seeing many modern women who are not wearing burqas so
to her she is slightly conflicted with this problem. As she herself has not worn a burqa till now.
