Abstract

The construction industry is at the frontline of development, and thus, is evolving

towards a sustainability-based industry. This means that cost is not the only decisive factor for a
project anymore.
The main objective of this study is to determine the difference in cost in providing utilities in a
residential morcellement by overhead and underground methods. A methodology was devised
which included a case study to apply research. Then research work was carried out and turned
into a literature review where the two concerned methods of providing utilities are elaborated.
The drawings are then quantified and quantities inserted in the Bill of Quantities. Rates are built
up, with some, which cannot be calculated, obtained from suppliers. The data is then analysed,
showing the comparison between the two methods of providing utilities in a morcellement.
Finally, a recommendation is made based on the outcome of the report.
