CHEMICAL REACTION ENGINEERING (CL 322)

ASSIGNMENT 2 Ch. 2. (Fogler)

1. Which reactor would require the smaller volume to achieve a conversion of 80%,
PFR or CSTR? FAo = 0.4 mol/s. Obtain conversion Vs Volume profile for PFR

2. What is wrong in the solution of the following Problem?

An adiabatic liquid phase exothermic reaction is to be carried out in a 25
dm3 CSTR. The entering molar flow rate of A times the reciprocal of the rate of
reaction is shown below as a function of conversion.
What is the conversion exiting the CSTR?
Solution

Let's calculate the area in the rectangle with the conversion at the minimum and
see if it matches the volume of 25 dm3 given in the problem statement at the
minimum

3. (a) Calculate the reactor volumes V1, V2, and V3 for the following reactor
network, FA0=2 mol/s.

4. Find the PFR volume for 80% conversion using the following rate data. Find
the exit conversion of two CSTRs in series such that the volume of each of
the CSTRs is equal and the sum of these two CSTRs is same as that of PFR.
Repeat it for 3 CSTRs.
Optional: Write a computer program to find the exit conversion of the
CSTRs in series which can take any number of CSTRs in series.
