T: Im going to show you a clip from The Dark Knight and then after Im going to ask you for, uh, the moral of the
story and then I want you to be able to tell me how it relates to The Pardoners Tale. Ill show the clip, its like 5 or
6 minutes long, and then youll talk with people around you about the questions, then well share out to the whole
class. Okay? I have two clips: one from The Dark Knight and one from Harry Potter, so thats what were doing now
[clip transitions to students watching movie clip from The Dark Knight]
T: Now, in small, little groups, Ill let you self divide into these little groups, um, I want you to discuss whats the
moral of this clip, if you were viewing this clip as just a single story, whats the moral! And then, how does this
compare to The Pardoners Tale? Similarities, differences.talk for a few minutes with the people next to
you[cannot hear]okay?
Students start speaking, student asks question, T responds: yes, its informal, go ahead!
[Students start speaking in small groups.]
T: Okay, *gestures arms upwards* lets bring it back, shhhhh, okay! What is the moral of this story? What is [cannot
hear] what is it?
M1: Mo money, mo problems!
T: More money, more problems, okay! *points to student to speak* Yeah, something else?
F1: [begins speaking but cannot be heard due to side conversations]
T: Hold on, shhh *gestures finger to mouth to shush* I cant hear! What is it?
F1: All I got is that if you have to commit murder in order to get more money out of life.
T: Okay, so that's the moral that youre getting out of the story, interesting, very different interpretation. Shhh,
*gestures to corner of the room* hey guys over there, quiet down! Okay, Kyla, what do you think?
F2: Um, [coughs], Im sorry, um The Pardoners Tale [cannot hear], this relates to The Pardoners Tale because they
all betray each other for greed.
T: Yeah, exactly! So watch who you trust, watch who youre friends with. Phones away. *gestures towards back of
the room* Phones away, right now in the back, please. Put your phone away. Okay, anyhow, how did this relate to
The Pardoners Tale? Kyla already touched on it, somebody elseHow did this *gestures towards board* relate to
The Pardoners Tale? This clip was pretty straightforward

M2: Yup!
M3: Uh, it relates[mumbles]
T: Dehane, are you sharing?
M3: Yeah!
T: So how did this clip that I showed from The Dark Knight relate to The Pardoners Tale?
M3: Wait, thats the story right? With the 3 men?
T: Yep, thats the story.
M3: It relates, cuz, um, the three people, they were all greedy and those people in The Dark Knight were greedy too.
They all want the money.
T: Yes, and their love of money is what ended up actually killing some of them, right? Okay, so I have one more clip
to show you. This clip is from Harry Potter and its from I think the 7th movie. How many of you, shhhhh I cant talk
over you, please listen up, I cant talk over you, so its from (like) the 7th one and its the story of the three brothers.
How many of you have ever heard of that?
[plays movie clip for class, students work on questions in small groups]
T: Okay so Im hearing a little bit of off topic conversations so that tells me that youre done!
M3: No, we not! We not!
T: Lets have this as a class discussion now! Shhh, okay so lets start off with what are the similarities or differences
with The Pardoners Tale and this. So when you were watching this, what made you go oh thats from The
Pardoners Tale! What kind of, like, popped into your mind? *points to student* Kyla!
F2: Well there were three brothers and also three rioters, and also the whole theme was greed.
T: Okay,
M4: [interrupts] Death!
T: So each of the brothers has a different kind of greed, right? *gestures towards another student to share*
F3: The, um, I feel like part of Death in this with the brothers was like pissed that the brothers built a bridge to get
away from him [..] he was envious of them [.] or whatever because they were all together and like how the old
man knew, the old man knew Death, like maybe he was Death.
T: What else?
M4: Death [mumbles]
T: You said the personification of Death, right? So have you heard of what, like, the grim reaper is? The hooded,
cloaked figure? So death, or Death as a person, that was in the three brothers tale and in The Pardoners Tale, right?
And so in this story, as Kayla was saying, please stop the side conversations, okay so, in this story Death meets the
three brothers on the bridge and find out that they are trying to evade their death, or escape their death, by using
their magic to build a bridge. Death is envious that they are able to build a bridge to escape their death, and he kind
of gives them these different gifts, right? So weve got the first three[movie cuts off].
