Poverty and Health Issues

According tothe censusof2010,5.2million American
Indians and Alaskan Natives make up 1.7% of the
population.
Against the 15.3% of the general population in poverty,
American Indians and Alaskan Natives were almost
doubled at 28.4%.
Against the 15.5% of the general population who lacked
health insurance, the American Indians and Alaskan
Natives came in at almost double again at 29.2%

Genocide
Few know about the genocide of the American
Indians whichalmost completely
eradicatedtheir race.This isreferredto as the
AmericanHolocaust. When Columbus brought
his men in search of gold, the Natives were
committed to slavery, murdered, tortured, and
also denied thebare necessities to survive
becausethey wereseen as inferior.As more
Europeans settled, more Native Americans were
slaughtered.This resulted inthe
Indiansbecoming the minority.

Ancestors
I believe our ancestors pasts makes us who we are
because every generation since then has carried a piece
with them. We should have learned more about their
culture in school and what harm can come from
discrimination, but instead they teach about the Jewish
Holocaust, which happened in another country. Because
of this we fail to learn the same things have happened in
our country.
I feel I still carry a portion of my ancestors heritage
because I live off the land. I also take pride in teaching
others the skills I have learned for living off the land. I
am active in the community and work to improve wildlife
habitat on my property as well as others.
