EXERCISE 1: GEOMETRICAL OPTICS

1. a) State
i) the laws of reflection and the laws of refraction.
ii) Snells Law.
iii) the properties of the image formed by a plane mirror.
b) What is the minimum height of the plane mirror for a man to see his whole
body? Assume that the distance of the eyes to the top of the head is x and
the distance from the feet to the eyes is y.
2. A vertical object placed in front of a spherical mirror and the linear
magnification of the image is 3. If an upright image is formed 40.0 cm from
the centre of curvature,
a) state the type of the spherical mirror used.
b) sketch a ray diagram for the image.

magnified image by a concave mirror.
b) A plano-convex lens is made of glass of refractive index 1.52, and the
radius of curvature of the surface is 30 cm.
i) Determine the focal length of the lens.
ii) If an object is placed 10 cm in front of the lens, what is the position of
the image.
4. An insect of height 1.5 cm is 13.0 cm from a converging lens of focal length
13.5 cm. Determine the position, properties and height of the image formed.
5. A convex meniscus lens is made of glass with refractive index, n = 1.5. The
radius of curvature of the concave surface is 46.2 cm and the radius of
curvature of the convex surface is 22.4 cm.
a) Write down the lens makers equation and state the meaning of each
parameter.

c) Determine the position of the image of an object which is placed 2.0 m in
front of the lens.
