Title: Learning and applying concepts of fractions and volume

Rationale: The unit involves fractions and volume in math and art classes
reinforced with techniques.
Benchmarks:
Math
5.NF- Number and Operations of fractions. Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to
add and subtract fractions.
5.MD- Measurement and Data. Geometric measurement: understand concepts of
volume and relate
volume to multiplication and to addition.
Art
ART.VA.II.5.1- Synthesize the knowledge of materials, techniques, and
processes to create artwork.
ART.VA.II.5.3- Explore and understand prospective subject matter, ideas,
and symbols for works of art.
ART.VA.II.5.4- Select and use subject matter, symbols, and ideas to
communicate meaning.
Grade Level: This unit is for the 5th grade level. Each class should be one hour long
with Math being before Art. Students with any special needs should ask for
assistance to be given any proper help.
Intended Outcomes: With completing this unit, students should be able to
understand the concepts of fractions and volume with being able to applying form
techniques to art.
Objectives: Math will complete teaching lessons on new concepts. They will have
lecture and worksheets for assessment.
Art will have activities what will be graded with their use of materials.
Day 1: Introduce volume
examples and geometric
shapes.

Math
Students will be
introduced to some
volume examples.
Following will be
introduced to the 1x1x1
unit cube.

Art
To start, students will be
asked what they have
learned in their math
class. Then they will be
introduced to their paper
mache project of making
small to medium size
geometric shapes. They
will use kleenex boxes
that they have brought in

Day 2: Continue with

volume and geometric
shapes.

Day 3: Rap up volume/

geometric shapes and
have intro to fractions.

Day 4: Continue with

fractions and introduce
symmetry.

Day 5: Rap up fractions

with examples from
geometric shapes and
finish symmetry.

Students will continue to

work with volume. They
will be given a worksheet
with examples to make
sure they are
understanding the
concepts.
Students will wrap up the
volume lesson with
learning LxWxH. Then
they will be introduced to
fractions.
Students will continue to
work with fractions with
worksheets that have
examples to see if they
understand the fraction
concepts.

Students will be given

their paper mache
projects that they made in
art class and will be given
the assignment of
measuring the volume of
it. Then they will practice
fractions with measuring if
they were to cut their
project in half what would
the volume be and
complete a worksheet
with these examples.

with them from home to

use as a guide.
Students will continue to
work on their paper
mache projects. They will
have to begin moving onto
the second layer of paper
to make sure the project is
sturdy.
Students will wrap up their
paper mache projects with
painting their projects with
primary colors and be
turned in to grade.
To start, students will be
asked what they learned
about fractions in their
math class. Then they will
move onto their next
project of symmetry
butterflies that will be
decorated with fractions of
and .
Students will wrap up their
butterfly symmetry
projects and will be turned
in to grade.

Needed Resources: For math, they will need pencils, rulers, paper, and cubes.
For art, they will need old newspapers, paper mache glue, paper towel, acrylic
paints, paint brushes, construction paper, scissors, and glue sticks.
Beginning: Each day will begin with a warm up question rather it be a review or
what you know question. Students then will be given their assignments/ materials
and will be required to keep on task. With every new assignment there will be given
clear instructions on what to do and what is expected.

Ending: Each day will end with a review. Having a check in to make sure all
students are on the right track. They are refreshed with any new information they
were given.
