Procedure:
Appoint1studentasKing,2studentsasParliament,and2studentsastaxcollectors.
Thesestudentswillsitinchairsinthefrontoftheroomnexttotheking.
ThekingwillwearacrownandsitonaThroneholdingalargecup.
Therestofthestudentsarecolonists.Eachgroupwillrepresentadifferentcolony.
Eachstudentwillgetasmallcupwith20beadsinit.
Thebeadswillrepresentmoney.
TheKingwillchooseataxcard,andamemberofparliamentwilldistributethetax
cardstooneofthecolonies.
Colonistswillpaytheirtaxestothetaxcollector,whowillbringbacktomoneytothe
Kingandparliament.
Parliamentwilleachget34beads,thekingwillget56beads.(Kingshould
endupwiththemostbeads).
Activitywillrununtilthecolonistshavelittleornomoneylefttopay.
Closing:
Attheendoftheactivity,askthestudentswhoplayedthecolonistshowtheyfelt,
andiftheythoughttheywerebeingtaxedfairly?Askthestudentshowtheywouldhavefeltif
theywereabletovoteonhowmuchtheywerebeingtaxed?
Discusswiththeclasshowtheyreparentspaytaxesondifferentthingsnow,buteach
statehasrepresentativesthatspeakforthem,anditisnotjustonepersondeciding
howmuch,orwhattaxespeoplewillpay.
